Shut Your Gob, Son

Mel Gibson is one of my favourite actors. He also happens to be an Aussie.

Why am I telling you this?

Because when allegations came out a few months ago that he was an anti-Semite, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Despite the fact that he belongs to a branch of Catholicism that rejects recent developments within the Church, including its absolution of Jews in the death of Christ. And despite the fact that his father and mother have denied the holocaust occurred and have accused Jews of conspiring to reform the Catholic Church.

Gibson had vehemently denied these accusations. He was not an anti-Semite, he said. Neither was his film, The Passion, anti-Semitic. In fact, anti-Semitism was contrary to the core message of the movie.

I guess the alarm bells should have started ringing when he said that many of his friends and business associates were Jewish, the cliched response of an anti-Semite denying their anti-Semitism. But alas, Gibson seemed to be such a likeable guy. Plus I really dug those Lethal Weapon movies. It would take more than jerk parents, his predisposition towards arch-conservative Catholism and a movie based on the New Testament to convince me that he was against my people.

Unfortunately, more is what I got.

Gibson recently accused “modern secular Judaism” of trying “to blame the Holocaust on the Roman Catholic Church.” “They’ve been working on that one for a while”, he stated. He also stood up for dear ol’ dad. “He never denied the Holocaust. He just said there were fewer than 6 million.” Thanks for clarifying that for us, Mel.

Gibson also showed that his ostensibly laid-back persona is perhaps one of his finest displays of acting, when he had these choice words to say about Frank Rich, a New York Times columnist who implied Gibson’s father is a holocaust denier.

“I want to kill him. I want his intestines on a stick. I want to kill his dog.”

How very un-Christian of you, Mel.
