No joke.

Except it is not what you think. He was a Samaritan, which is not the same as being Jewish. Samaritans are descended from the ancient Israelites, but rejected the oral law. The one who live in the disputed territories are both Israeli citizens (who can serve in the IDF) and represented in the PLO Arab legislature.
