Absolute Legend

Question: What is more impressive than a former US president jumping out of a plane for his 80th birthday?

Answer: A 101 year-old man jumping out of a plane for a “drunken dare.”

Frank Moody, from the eastern resort city of Cairns, earned himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by making a tandem jump from 3,000 meters (9,900 feet) with an experienced skydiver, a spokeswoman for the Skydive Cairns told the Australian Associated Press (AAP) on Wednesday.

Moody beat the previous record holder, a 94-year-old Norwegian who made his jump in 1999, by seven years, said spokeswoman Amanda Pilkington.

“He’s an absolute legend,” she said.

“It was a bit of a drunken dare by some of his mates at the local Holloways Beach football club. He said ‘Sure, I’ll go jump out of an aeroplane’,” she said.

“He’s very switched on and very witty and charming. It’s an absolute pleasure to have done this for him,” she said.

And how does an Aussie celebrate his drunken exploits?

After his jump, Moody went back to his football club for a Guinness to celebrate with the mates who put him up to the adventure, she said.

But of course.

That’s just outstanding. How wonderful to see someone living so well at such an age.

A few years ago I did a tandem jump from 18,000 feet. Those 90 seconds of freefall and 5 minute parachute down to earth were WELL worth the long drive and jump fee. If you haven’t done it, do it. You won’t regret it (and if you’re in the California Bay Area, I recommend “Skydive Hollister,” the highest commercial tandem jump in the U.S.A. (at least it was when I went)).
