Tisha Be’Av

Starting from tonight is the Jewish fast day of Tisha Be’av, the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. It is a day that all manner of tragedy has befallen the Jewish people, including the following:

  • The destruction of the First and Second Temples
  • The sin of the spies, resulting in G-d’s decree that the Children of Israel who left Egypt could not enter the land of Israel
  • The fall of Betar, the last fortress to hold out against the Romans
  • The explusion of the Jews from Spain in 1492
  • The beginning of World War I

Here is a full list of the terrible events that occurred on this day.

And here is something eery. Tisha Be’Av literally means the 9th of Av, since it falls on the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. Av is the 11th month in the Jewish calendar. So the date of Tisha Be’Av can be written as 9-11.

I wish all of my Jewish readers a Tsom Kal (easy fast).
