More on Gal Fridman and Israel’s first ever gold medal:
“It’s a beautiful ending to my career,” the four-time Olympian said, adding that he and Fridman, a friend and training partner, would celebrate together Wednesday evening.—-Kaklamanakis said, “Gal deserved to win the title. I am very happy for him.”
“For us, for the people who live in Israel, this warms your heart,” said Gilad Mulyan, one of three Israelis among 250 on a boat who watched Fridman win the Mistral race. “When Gal won, he came over to us and said, ‘Hi.’ The Greeks around us on the boat, they were all clapping and cheering for him, yelling, ‘Go, Gal.’ Everyone was together in celebration. It was a very special moment.”The moment stretched on into an unforgettable sunset scene. Kissing his gold medal, staring up at his flag with his anthem playing, Fridman made Israel tangible, real and impossible to ignore. Who in the world would not recognize this man?
