JIB Awards – Finalizing the Categories

I would like to thank all of you once again for your insightful and helpful comments regarding the categories. Your willingness to discuss this earnestly has made it relatively easy to amend and adapt the categories based on your suggestions.

I aim to have the categories finalized by tomorrow at the latest, so the nominations process can begin next week (hopefully Sunday).

After taking into account all comments up until now, here is the updated categories list:

Best Overall Blog *
Best New Blog 2004 *
Best Group Blog *
Best Humor Blog *

Best Designed Blog *
Best Life in Israel Blog
Best Israel Advocacy Blog
Best Politics, Current Affairs, and Academia Blog
Best Personal Blog
Best Religion Blog
Best Jewish Culture Blog
Best Post by a Jewish Blogger
Best “Series” by a Jewish Blogger
Best of the Rest (for nominated blogs that do not really fit into their category)

As a general rule, I want to limit nominations for a blog to one category. The exceptions are:

  • Those categories marked with a *. A blog may be included in this category, as well as one of the other ones.

  • The last two categories, which relate to specific posts or series. Of course a blog nominated in another category can also have a post or series nominated in these ones.
  •

(I will post the full set of nomination rules next week).

Tomorrow I will close the categories, so here is your final chance for category-related comments.

Note: This post will remain at the top of the page until the next JIB Awards Update.

Even with your exceptions, why bother with that? Let blogs be nominated any which way they apply. Like the Oscars! What’s the big advantage of restricting nominations? How will you decide if a blog gets nominated in more than one allowed category, which category to include it in and which to exclude it from?

Now, onto more pertinent issues, at the awards ceremony, will they be serving pickled herring?

    2. Oh! And since this is like a Jewish thing, how can you possibly not have a food related category? As in best food related post or something. Every other Jewish thing has a big food element in it, why not this? Especially since, as I understand it, there will be no awards ceremony, nor will there be any pickled herring. Feh.

    3. Good idea. Pickled herring for the winners, and chopped liver for everyone else.

The nomination restriction is purely a matter of practicality. I am going to have my hands full as it is; it will be virtually impossible to manage the nominations and votes otherwise.

Also, once again bear in mind the publicity aim of the awards. As long as a blog appears, with its link, even once, then this aim is achieved. The competitive and “winning” parts of these awards adds a fun element, but is not the ultimate goal.

What? What the hell are you talking about?? Chopped liver is way better than pickled herring!

    5. I am working on the polls. it will most likely be one vote per person per day (like we had for the Wizbang Weblog Awards).

The polls should be able to block an IP address for a specified amount of time (like a day).

    6. Jose,

I did initially want this, but it will be difficult for the following reasons:

      1. There are apparently at least 30,000 Israeli blogs in hebrew!

      2. How do different language blogs “go head to head” against each other?

I am open to suggestions how to overcome this.
