Paying Shmuley (a Visit)

Allison Kaplan Sommer is no fan of Shmuley Boteach, and regular readers will know neither am I.

After reading Allison’s post today, I was inspired to pay Shmuley’s website a visit. Here are some of my observations:

  • For someone who comes out against sexually explicit images and ‘immodesty’, I find it extremely curious that the cover of his book, The Private Adam, as it appears on his site, features two naked people, replete with their genitalia. I guess he opposes using sex to sell..except when it comes to his own books.
  •

  • His blog still has no comments facility. Read here for why the comments facility was disabled.
  •

  • Shmuley is requesting contributions since “reader contributions are an important source of income to maintain [his] site.” So for $75, he will answer your emails. Wow.
  •

  • Shmuley is willing to “make time from his busy schedule to assist couples and individuals who are in need of counseling.” But of course it will cost you.
  •

  • His About Shmuley section is unintentionally funny. For a start, you can read all about what a celebrity Shmuley has become…and then be reminded about his work criticizing celebrity culture
  • Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, named by Talkers Magazine as one of the hundred most important radio hosts in America, is a nationally syndicated talk show host, the international best-selling author of 14 books, and an acclaimed syndicated columnist. A winner of the London Times highly prestigious “Preacher of the Year” award, Rabbi Shmuley has lectured and appeared in print, radio, and TV all over the globe. His radio show, “Passion,” airs daily on the Liberty Broadcasting Network from 2-5pm.

Rabbi Shmuley’s best-selling books include Kosher Sex, Kosher Adultery, Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments, and the critically-acclaimed Judaism for Everyone. His book, Why Can’t I Fall in Love was a finalist for the 2002 Books for a Better Life Award and has just published The Private Adam: Becoming a Hero in a Selfish Age which critiques the American celebrity culture.

Shmuley would also be well-advised to update this section.

In 2000-2001 he ran a one-year initiative with the singer Michael Jackson promoting parents spending more time with their children.

But maybe I am splitting hairs hares.

Dave we agree again. (Saw what you wrote about me on canonist. Not nice.)

Check my blog (http://dovbear.blogspot.com/2004/11/stick-to-sex-shmuly-ii.html) for proof.

      Dov,

I did not write anything ABOUT you on Canonist. I wrote a comment directed at you, and it was tongue in cheek. Smiley face and all.

For someone who makes many tongue in cheeks comments yourself, I find it curious that you should castigate me for one of mine.

Thank G-d more people can see what a fake Hollywood “Rabbi” this guy is. Just think about it, how many American Rabbis do you know of with the Last name thats Hebrew like Boteach? I’ll bet he legally changed his name..
