Dave just out of curiosity: How come you exclude Smooth Stone from your "where credit is Jews" category? I am fairly certain he/she (remains a mystery) is Jewish, since I remember smooth to have been "sitting shiva" the other day.

The child probably is not a mamzer. It would be a mamzer if the wife had been committing adultery and was its biological mother. But since according to biblical law, a man can have two wives, it's not a mamzer. Just a scandal. The poor little boy. And I feel sorry for the couple's other children too. Their parents are in jail, their dad's been sleeping with their "aunt," their mother went berserk . . .

That is one of the saddest, sickest stories I have ever read! D, you are so spot on with your take on it! I almost laughed but... Haaretz just loves these stories... when they're about religious Jews, don't they!??

The thing I found most interesting in the story was how the adults involved (as twisted and sick as they might be) were most concerned about doing "right" by the child... a mamzer(?) ... poor kid! My heart really goes out to him!
