I suspect that the nature of his opposition to the regime back then wasn't exactly noble either. He is a truly rabid anti-Semite posing as an anti-Zionist, but not putting too much effort into maintaining his disguise. A few of his articles were published in Israel, some by Haaretz, some by the brilliant Russian immigrant newspaper Vesty (who fittingly headlined the section where they put it "Voice of the enemy").
