Improved Commenting on this Blog

A while ago, I received feedback regarding the commenting system on this blog, and the necessity for people to create reader accounts in order to comment. As a result, I allowed anonymous comments to make things easier.

While spam has not proved to be a problem, allowing anonymous comments has meant that many comments on this blog are not accompanied by a reader’s name.

I have just tweaked the commenting template so that now, readers can enter their name and email address before commenting. The only problem is that those of you who are logged in to a user account can no longer comment without entering your name and email, unless you are replying to someone’s comment. Why? I don’t know, but I think overall this situation is better.

Please let me know whether or not you prefer things this way. I will either keep this new system, or revert to the old one, based on your feedback.

That’s all fine but can you get rid of the 60′s psychodelic wallpaper background? My head is spinning!

Wow, yes that was awful. I think I tinkered around too much, and didn’t preview the damage. All is fixed now ( I hope).

It’s much better to allow commenting like this (the new system). Blogger works the same way now. I admit I have never commented here because of the complicated registration process (I’m lazy), except once, and that was when you threatened to stop blogging due to low commenting frequency ;) Yepp, I fell for the April Fool’s joke.

Keep it like this. It’s great.

Not wild about having to enter my name and email address every time. Also, I miss the preview button.

Is there no way of having a ‘remember me’ checkbox? Failing that I guess I’ll use one of those utilities that automatically fills in forms based on certain criteria.

Anonymous commenting is better. If you raise the bar by requiring people to sign up for yet-another-username, then most people will just give it a miss and choose not to comment. It’s the sad truth.

BTW, I answered your question about comment formatting over on my blog:

    Inconsistency.

In this post of mine, I entered my NAME and I have no problem posting it.

If however, I hit the REPLY link to an existing post and enter my NAME there, it will not post the comment until i clear the NAME field.

Dave – Prefer it this way – Iget tired of having to register at sites all over the place. That’s why I never commented until now, but have been lurking!
