Looking For Help in All The Wrong Places

Al Crapeeza reports on an interesting request for Israeli assistance at the UN.

Israel will respond in the coming days to an unprecedented request from Qatar to support Doha’s candidacy for a rotating seat on the UN Security Council, the Israeli foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Qatar’s move marks the first time an Arab state has requested Israel’s help in obtaining one of the 10 rotating seats on the 15-member security council and comes amid increasingly warm relations between the two countries.

“Qatar has asked the Israeli government to support its candidacy for the UN Security Council,” Israeli foreign ministry spokeswoman Amria Oron told the al-Arabiya news channel.

“Evidently we will look into this request on the basis of the positive relations between Qatar and ourselves and we hope to give a reply in the course of the coming days.

“We think that relations with Qatar are very important given that it is the only Arab country in the Gulf to have relations with Israel,” she said, expressing hope that relations “will expand further in the next days or months”.

When asked about the request by Aljazeera, Qatar’s ambassador to the UN, Nasir bin Abd al-Aziz Nasir said: “We asked all members of the UN, including Israel, for their support and we received a positive reaction.”

If Israel does support Qatar’s candidacy, do you think this will be reciprocated at the UN? The test will come next time there is a one-sided resolution condemning Israel. Furthermore, do you think Qatar would support Israel’s candidacy, if that situation ever arose?

I think we all know the answer to this.

Update: In its report of this development, the Jerusalem Post states:

Israeli and Qatari officials refused to comment publicly on the development.

Which is interesting, considering the Al Crapeeza story above quotes both an Israeli foreign ministry spokeswoman, and Qatar’s ambassador to the UN.

Qatar on the Oooom Shmooom Security Council, and with Israel’s help no less? What’s there not to like?!

Are one-sided resolutions condemning Israel allways and inherently wrong?

Is Israel’s behaviour self justifying? If so, are there any other states with these qualities?

If not, maybe you should consider evaluating the background to this hypothetical resolution before blaming its backers.

I have evaluated the background to the hypothetical resolution, condemning Israel’s security fence, which is necessary due to PLO Arab terrorism.

Yes, the one-sided resolutions condemning Israel are inherently wrong, especially considering they are one-sided, and almost never condemn the terror which has precipitated Israel’s actions being condemned.
