Name that Dish

The search is on for a better name for kangaroo meat.

Australia has launched a competition to find a new way of describing kangaroo meat which will be less offensive to diners sensitive about eating the national symbol.

Organisers point out that a slice of cow or pig on a plate is called by the more palatable euphemisms of beef or pork, and want to find a similarly savoury name for cute kangaroos.

How about hops? Or marsoupial?

    Dogfood.

Traife is for dogs and that’s what aussies should do with their extra roos. I’d be more likely to eat snakemeat than roo. Wouldn’t matter what moniker you put on it.

If you compare the names given the livestock, you will find that the term for the beastie on the hoof is of Anglo-Saxon origin, while on the table, it is of Norman French. (cattle – beef(bouef, calf – veal(veaux), and so on. This reflects the serf-master relation of the Saxon Serfs and the Norman lords.

So continuing along this line, what is the French for Kangaroo?
