Countdown to the Israeli Elections: 5 Days to Go

  • The latest polls have Kadima down to 36 seats, Labor up to 21, and Likud down to 14. I think Labor have a point.
  • Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has stated that any party wanting to join the coalition must back his “pullout” plan.
  • Kadima have revealed their plan for dividing Jerusalem, which involves Israel holding on to the ancient city and adjoining neighborhoods, but giving over many Arab neighborhoods “that are far from the traditional core of the city.”
  • Shas MK Yair Peretz resigned from the Knesset after being convicted of fraud. But not to worry. He’s going to heaven anyway.
  • Yisrael Beitenu (Israel Our Home) Chairman Avigdor Lieberman invokes Henry Kissinger (at least the 2006 version) to demonstrate international support for his “land swap” plan.
  • Seemed like a good idea at the time?

I have never been so nervous before elections before. I expect that I will feel uncomfortabe awaiting the next British and American election results too.
