On the Way to World Domination

Measure 1: Force RSS feed subscribers to visit.

I have already implemented my first measure to increase traffic to this blog. My RSS feed will now only contain excerpts of posts, so if you are one of those naughty people who only read my blog using an RSS feed reader, you will have to actually visit my blog to read the full post.

(thank you Ezzie for the suggestion).

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

But given the comments and emails I have received, I have to listen to the masses. Therefore, I have reinstated full post texts for RSS feeds.

Do you want people to read what you write or do you just want to count them?

You have 96 subscribers at Bloglines (and I’m one of them).

Yes, I want people to read what I write, but I also want to build up the sense of community on the site, and have people visit and comment more. Look at a blog like LGF. It is mostly popular because of the community it has built up.

I don’t like being manipulated into doing something that I don’t want to do in the first place.

If you have a post that I would want to comment upon, I would click the link and do it.

    Chanan,

Thanks for the advice and link. I have taken heed, and reversed my previous decision.

BTW… and this is a pretty good halfway house … an aggregator like Bloglines can’t pick up images from your site so to see those it is usually necessary to click through.

Anyway I think you’ve made a correct reversal.

As to getting comments and community its not so easy to do what LGF has done.

I would say that your most excellent blog awards are a major issue and you should try to leverage those a little better. I see the awards or nomination images on many of my fav sites.

Ouch. Now I look evil for suggesting it.

But the question comes down to (as said above) you want readers or the ability to count them. I’m surprised, because it’s really not a big deal to click once and open the page (unless your page loads really slowly on their browser, which is certainly possible), but if the readers don’t want to, then there is not much you can do.

Personally, though I’ve always had mine on short, so it’s not really an issue, I see (now that I read through a feed) that many posts come up in full anyway. No clue how to change that, so if you’ve got any ideas… please, let me know.

Ezzie, I don’t think you are capable of looking or sounding evil.

But thanks for the idea anyway.
