Blog Efficacy Poll

I have always been curious as to how effective pro-Israel blogs like this one are. We like to think we are, but do we really play a significant role in shaping people’s opinions, and influencing their hearts and minds? Or do we play a more minor role?

Please take the time to answer the poll question. And if you really want to help, please leave some more details in the comments – such as which blog(s) influenced you the most, how effective you think pro-Israel blogs are, how you came around to support Israel (if you did), how we could improve in getting the message across, and anything else you would like to add.

Note that you can comment anonymously, so don’t hold back.

I think this can generate a very thought-provoking, and interesting discussion, so I encourage you all to participate.

Update
: If you are a pro-Israel blogger, please point your readers to the poll and encourage them to respond. It is in all of our interests to ascertain our effectiveness, and analyze if we can do things better.

  1. I do enjoy reading the blog. I don’t always agree with what Dave says, but it is interesting hearing from someone who is in the thick of things and their perspective on events. Living in the diaspora it is good to hear of what is actually happening rather than reading/hearing a jaundiced report in the press. Keep up the good work fella.

  2. Although I’ve always been pro-Israel I’m sure you and others can and do change people’s minds so stay on the case and keep it up!

(I hope that last bit didn’t sound too suggestive 😉 I think you know what I mean!)

  3. I can’t claim to be a member of the diaspora but I agree with Peter. It’s great to read the weblogs and get views and insight from you and others. So you and others do play a significant role in getting the word out. Even thought I am in the choir I can use the pro-Israel blogs as a resource for someone who isn’t as supportive or informed as I am. By the time I found the pro-Israel blogs I was already very pro-Israel.

  4. Am new to computers and reading blogs, and do not yet blog myself, BUT am active in pro-Israel advocacy by other means, and find pro-Israel blogs definitely do change views, but indirectly more so than directly–they EQUIP pro-Israel advocates with up-to-date info for (1) persuading others, and (2) use in fast response or pro-active actions like writing a letter-to-the-editor or political official or buying a book, warning against a book, etc. Uh, I came to support Israel by becoming a Christian! (I’m a gentile Bible believer who was saved out of the Catholic tradition.) There’s an oddly extreme and disproportionate enmity to Israel and the Jews that thru the Bible and now spiritually illuminated eyes I see can only be accounted for by spiritual explanations. By reading the Bible everything that’s happened to Israel started to make sense. One of my pastors (a Jewish Christian) wrote a book “God’s Plan for Israel” that helped me, and he gave out free copies of the Christian Zionist magazine “Israel My Glory,” which in turn led me to works such as Elwood McQuaid’s “The Zion Connection.” The blog reading came only recently, and embarrassingly, the one that’s helped me the most is debbieschlussel.com, which I’m somewhat embarrassed to mention because its tone is abrasive and I don’t want to be associated with all of her characterizations and views, but she’s helpful because her blog is timely, “hot” pro-Israel info that I can act on. Best, ChristianZionist

  5. Making a difference?

Zionaussie Dave has a poll on the efficacy of pro-Israeli blogging. I have always been curious as to how effective pro-Israel blogs like this one are. We like to think we are, but do we really play a significant role…

  6. A Poll

Dave at Israellycool has posted a poll. He’s looking for an indication on whether pro-Israeli blogs are playing any role in shaping people’s opinions. Go put your two cents in. The poll, only one question, is probably a bit too…

  7. You didn’t give enough options so I had to choose the last one even though it is not completely accurate.

We used to support Israel with quite large donations to the JTA. Since Amona and the election of Kadima and given the liberal appeasers who run the JTA we no longer support Israel.

  8. I think like most Americans, I was pro-Palestinian. Then, I visited Israel and my eyes were opened. Sadly, I think most pro-Israeli sentiment from evangelical Christians is a subtle form of anti-Semitism ( if they are all over in the Promised Land, there won’t be any here.) I love reading blogs regarding Israel / Judaism and I think that if one person decides that Israel should exist, we have won the ‘hearts and minds’ debate.

  9. Yes, I used to vaguely support Israel, but tended to believe the pro-Palestinian reporting in the Australian media. Your site and others (Only in Israel in particular) changed my view on life in Israel and help by highlighting the truth behind a lot of the reports. The Australian news all showed the first reports of the Gaza-beach incident last week, but didn’t appear to follow up the later news. Your site provided the links I could send to people to show them the IDF reports. Another concrete result of reading your blog and others is that I now donate to MDA instead of the Aus. Red Cross. Congratulations on your work.

  10. An interesting question. I sometimes wonder whether blogs really just serve as podiums from which people who disagree talk past each other. Nonetheless, the speech itself has value. Being involved in an extremely liberal graduate school on the University of California campus I’ve learned first hand that pro-palestinian, anti-Israel, anti-western discourse abounds. Only when one stands up and begins to speak on Israel’s behalf does that seem to open the door for people to back away from the reflexive anti-Israel bias. Look, if 16% of the people responding to this blog have changed their minds, that’s a great sign. Perhaps a more interesting number is to focus in on those who sit on the fence – without these blogs would they still be on the fence? Or perhaps they would move into the “I support Palestinians” category?

  11. I spent a few minutes reading your site and have viewed some from the other side. Not likely to spend more timing reading yours. My overwhelming reaction to what is happening in Lebanon and Israel is sadness. But I struggle to have much sympathy for the Israeli polity – it is the dominant military power and it is very difficult to avoid the conclusion that it is its unilateral decision to escalate this conflict. The suffering on the Lebanese side is obviously vastly greater. Thus as a non-partisan, I have greater sympathy for the Lebanese. That is not to take a political position on the issue – to do so would be to condone the bellicose on both sides. I do not care for moralising from belligerents. The “pro-Israeli” among you will probably dismiss this view as not comprehending the threat posed by Hezbollah. I?not a keen observer, but if there was a political entity on the backfoot it was Hezbollah and the Syrian position in Lebanon…note the use of the past tense.

“Aussie Dave” I don?know what your affiliation with Australia is. But as an Australian I am disappointed that you?chosen to associated Australia with a quite obviously partisan position in a conflict remote from Australia. Of course you have the right to do so. But the tone of your site and the poll question suggests that, sadly, your association with Australia has not been sufficient for you to comprehend that Australians in general are fair-minded. Australians overwhelmingly recognise that the conflict is driven by political forces on both sides that benefit from war – the belligerents on both sides hold equal moral responsibility. Unfortunately, the suffering is not evenly distributed among the innocent on both sides. Most Australians can see this. Maybe you and your fellow pro-Israeli posters might mediate on that. Probably to no effect. You will likely just read each other?postings. Your blog, and the postings on it, have only helped re-inforce my prejudice against the attitudes on both sides that seem to perpetuate the misery in the middle east…

  12. They like to kill you, terrorize you, and shoot you in the back. But when you point a gun at them, they say they are being abused. When we love someone who died, we don’t parade them in the streets and show the big hole and bloods on their body to the media, instead we hide their ruined bodies and show them in pictures as alive. They like to destroy and terrorize countries, and do barbaric acts to us (“beheading” anyone?). But these barbarians whine like pigs when you slap their wrists. Hello Muslim!

  13. I think that one of the reasons why the terrorist networking business is such a success these days could root from the the growing hatred towards the USA. A hatred that grows with a pace equal to the amount of wars against “the terrorist’s” home countries enforced by the USA and its allies. I believe any good American citizen would strap a bag of explosives to his body and use himself to kill any Islamic intruders trying to invade his home country. We are not different, we are just in different situations. So I think terrorist attacks could be minimized if the USA would stop agreeing with Israel that the value of 2 Israeli soldiers equals the value of 400 Lebanesse civilians.

  14. Anyone who says that being a Christian makes them anti-semitic has no clue into what Christianity is all about. Christ was a Jew….who in my own opinion was God who came to this earth…to be amongst His people. Who were these people? They were the Jews, but because they rejected Him, a door was opened for non-Jews to learn about God, heaven, and eternity.

Do I believe that the Jews had a part in the crucifixion of Christ? Yes……..Do I hate them…..no……Why…..because if He had not died on the cross the scriptures would not have been fulfilled, but do I love them anyway….yes…..why………because they are Gods chosen people….and as far as I am concerned…….the main difference between most Christians and Jews……is the timing of the return of God. Most Jews still think the Messiah hasn’t come……I think He did…….and will return again some day…..but even in thinking that….that doesn’t make me anti-semitic.

I know the Jewish people have suffered since the begining of time for being God’s chosen people…..I know they are going to suffer more too, and it’s sad….but somewhere down the line…God will put an end to it all…..and God will also lay waste to all who oppose Israel. Now, with that being said…..let me get to what I really want to say……and that is……..there is no way that Hezzbollah will be disarmed without Israel taking it to Lebanon like never seen before.

I am saddened that people die in war……both combatants, and non-combatants, but I cannot understand why Israel is allowing public sentiment to disway them from sending everything short of nuclear weapons at the enemy. If I were in control, I would decimate Lebanon….I would completely destroy it……..but that does not mean that I am anti-lebanese….I am just anti-Hezzbollah…..and the Lebanese people have allowed a plague to live in their midst. So I say…..if you are not pro-Hezzbollah………and live in Lebanon….you have 1 week to get out of Dodge AKA..Lebanon……I will even supply the means to get you out……I don’t want one innocent person to die……but after that….I am gonna flatten everything…….until every nook and cranny is filled with dust…….

Once that’s done……I would rebuild it……and only allow non- Hezzbollah, non -terrorist people in the country…..and I would make it impossible for them to ever get in. Then the lebanese people could live in peace and harmony with the Jewish people……and even us Christians……but know this….as a Christian I do not want to take over the promised land……I want the Temple rebuilt…I want the muslims out of Jerusalem……and Christ to return….so that I may live and dwell with Him for all eternity. Is that so much to ask?

“Our right to exist–have you ever heard of such a thing? Would it enter the mind of any Briton or Frenchman, Belgian or Dutchman, Hungarian or Bulgarian, Russian or American, to request for its people recognition of its right to exist? Mr. Speaker: We were granted our right to exist by the God of our fathers at the glimmer of the dawn of human civilization four thousand years ago. Hence, the Jewish people have an historic, eternal and inalienable right to exist in this land, Eretz Israel, the land of our forefathers. We need nobody’s recognition in asserting this inalienable right. And for this inalienable right, which has been sanctified in Jewish blood from generation to generation, we have paid a price unexampled in the annals of nations. Mr. Speaker: From the Knesset of Israel, I say to the world, our very existence per se is our right to exist!” -Menachem Begin to the Knesset upon assuming the premiership in 1977

  17. Aussie Dave,
Of course pro-Israel blogs are effective. Any information which educates the masses about Israel and Jewish history benefits all concerned. I ran news based blogs for years and asked myself the same question because I was doing what everyone else seemed to be doing, most of whom were doing a much better job than I was. A close friend told me I should come out of the closet and tell the world how I really felt about the issues and stop trying to be politically correct and socially acceptable. I deleted my previous blogs and set myself to the task of creating a blog which reflected who I was and what I stood for, detractors be damned! Private conversations and e-mail communications have shown me that I made the right decision. I have made many enemies with the new blog but my supporters have more than made up for them. I am amazed at the number of Jews who tell me that they wish they could speak out but fear the reprecussions. My newest endeavor still needs work but the word is going forth. I only have readers in two countries thus far as compared to 38 in my old blog but this will change as I learn how to better publicise the blog. All pro-Israel and pro-Jew bloggers should keep up the good fight. Tal Abrams
