Liveblogging the War: Monday July 24th

The IDF expanded its deployment of ground forces in southern Lebanon last night, and captured 2 Hizbullah fighters in the village of Maroun al-Ras, the village which the IDF has seized control of. Our ground forces are now engaged in a heavy exchange of fire with Hizbullah terrorists north of Maroun al-Ras, as the next phase of the ground operation begins. Also, the IAF destroyed a 14-barrel Katusha rocket launcher pointed at Haifa, as well as 8 other Katusha rocket launchers. According to a high-ranking IAF officer, we are picking up on Hizbullah’s method of hiding Katusha launchers.

Paratroop and Golani battalions, accompanied by armored corps forces and air cover, have started advancing in the direction of the south Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil (dubbed “Hizbullah’s capital in southern Lebanon”). During this next phase of ground operations, the IDF plans on focusing on such problematic villages, implementing the lessons learned from Maroun al-Ras.

Meanwhile, IDF Military Intelligence (MI) believes the army has 10 days left before diplomatic pressure puts an end to the operation, which MI believes has already dealt a severe blow to Hizbullah. Based on MI’s estimates, Hizbullah will run out of Katushas within a month, thanks in part to the IAF’s much maligned targeting of roads and supply routes, which has thwarted Syrian and Iranian attempts to send supplies to Hizbullah.

On the southern front, the IAF struck a house in Gaza city belonging to a Hamas terrorist, and which was being used as a storage facility for rockets and weapons of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Updates (Israel time; most recent at top)

Tuesday updates here.

11:05PM: The IDF reported at least 15 Hizbullah gunmen were killed today.

11:00PM: According to a Guardian poll, 61% of the British public believe Israel’s military response to the kidnapping of two soldiers by Hizbullah is “exaggerated,” 22% believe Israel’s response is proportionate, and 30%. agree with the stance of Prime Minister Tony Blair who backed Israel’s military response.

I wonder what the 61% would say if the IRA fired from Ireland rockets at English cities, including London.

10:45PM: Besides the 2 helicopter pilots who were killed today, 2 soldiers were killed and 18 soldiers injured in exchanges of fire between ground forces and Hizbullah terrorists.

Meanwhile, Hizbullah are boasting that they downed a helicopter and killed a dozen IDF soldiers.

10:30PM: This next story is dedicated to those who cling to the false belief that civilians are dying in Lebanon because Israel hates Arabs, and not because Hizbullah is purposely operating in civilian areas.

A 47-year-old unidentified Lebanese woman was admitted to Ziv Hospital in Safed on Saturday afternoon as she was brought to the Israel-Lebanese border suffering from severe injuries from a high-velocity gunshot wound in the back.

According to her son, who accompanied her to the border and to Ziv, they had been fleeing from the area of conflict. The pair is said to have been brought to an area near the northern border of Israel by a Lebanese physician and rescued under fire by Israel Defense Forces operating in southern Lebanon. The IDF transferred them to an ambulance that rushed to Safed, which itself has been under Hizbullah missile attack since the beginning of the war.

Doctors in the trauma unit administered lifesaving procedures, according to hospital director Dr. Oscar Embon and deputy director Dr. Calin Shapira. She was found to have a large, deep wound across the right side of her back, contusions in the right lung and fractures in several ribs. She was hurried to the surgical theater for treatment of the wound and a closer examination of the injured area.

Shapira said on Saturday night that the woman was in serious condition, attached to a respirator and under anesthesia. It was the first report of Israeli medical facilities treating any of the many Lebanese who have been wounded in the Israeli action in Lebanon.

Have I mentioned how proud I am of my country?

10:02PM: Israel has reportedly put its diplomatic missions abroad on high alert for Hizbullah attacks.

9:03PM: Here’s another worthy cause: Centrerion Canadian Politics has drawn my attention to this effort to raise funds to help move children in Israel’s north further south, so that they may be out of range of Hizbullah’s Katusha rockets.

You can donate here.

8:45PM: Secretary of State Rice has just arrived in Israel.

8:10PM: It has now been released for publication that the 2 pilots of the chopper which crashed today were killed. The cause of the crash is still unclear, and the IDF is not ruling out the possibility that it was shot down (as I mentioned in my 4:53PM update).

6:45PM: Here’s a great video of Ben Stein on Fox’s Cavuto program.

Who would have thought that the man who immortalized the words “Anyone? Anyone” would be so articulate in real life?

6:40PM: The IAF have struck a weapons storehouse belonging to the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

6:20PM: Solomon has video from a pro-Hizbullah demonstration in Boston. If you haven’t seen this already, please check out the behavior of these “peace-loving” people.

5:50PM: The IAF has targeted a car carrying some Hizbullah terrorists fleeing a rocket launching site. No word yet on whether we transformed them into worm food.

5:25PM: Get this: Palestinian Prime Minister/terrorist Ismail Haniyeh is begging the US to restrain Israel.

“All that we ask the American administration is to take a moral stance toward the Palestinian people, and the Palestinian suffering and to bear its responsibility as a superpower in this world,” he told The Associated Press in an interview. He called on America “to restrain the Israeli aggression and stop it.”

To use an analogy, it is like the school bully picking on a kid, the kid fighting back, and then the bully begging the teacher to break up the fight.

If Haniyeh wants us to stop fighting back, I suggest he orders his people to return our soldier, and stop firing Kassams into Israel.

5:15PM“Glass half-full” HizbullahThis is how the terrorist organization reacted to news that the IDF had taken over the village of Maroun Ras:

“An army that fights with excellent forces and tanks with the assistance of an air force cannot got into a village directly on the border except after a battle that has continued for days with great losses against a number of opposition fighters is a failed and defeated army.”

Actually, the reason why our army “with excellent forces and tanks with the assistance of an air force” did not “go into a village directly on the border except after a battle that has continued for days” was to avoid civilian casualties. As for ”great losses,” we have lost a handful of soldiers during this ground operation.

Hizbullah are continuing in the grand tradition of the Egyptians who, to this very day, think they won the Yom Kippur War.

4:56PM: 6 people have been lightly wounded from this afternoon’s rocket barrage.

4:53PM: According to the Jerusalem Post, the chopper may have been shot down.

A high ranking IAF officer told The Jerusalem Post that an initial report that the helicopter got entangled in an electrical wire was false, saying that the helicopter was flying at an altitude that was much higher than the electric cable.

The officer said that the IDF was looking into the possibility that the Apache helicopter was shot down by Hizbullah anti-aircraft fire.

4:12PM: The IDF have captured a number of controlling positions east of the town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, while the IAF have hit a number of armed men in the area.

4:00PM: The victims of yesterday’s Katusha attacks.

Habib Isa Awad, 48

Awad, a Christian Arab, was married and the father of four: two daughters, aged 7 and 15; and two sons, 11 and 13.

Habib Hajj, a close friend and relative, said that Awad wanted only to provide for his family. “He was a good man, in every sense of the word, who cared only about taking care of his wife and children, nothing else interested him and certainly not regional politics.”

Awad was one of the most senior employees at the Siboni carpentry shop, the place where he was killed. Owner David Siboni said that Awad was a dedicated and trustworthy employee, who was devoted to his work.

Shimon Glikblich, 60

Shimon Glikblich worked in the Spanish nursing home in Haifa’s Neveh Sha’anan neighborhood. He immigrated from Moscow with his wife, Paulina, and daughter, Yulia, 15 years ago.

Yulia, who is in her twenties and is studying social work, said yesterday: “He was a good father, he liked to help people. Everyone knew him. Until it happens to you, you don’t believe that something like this can happen.”

Paulina said that for Shimon, “his daughter was his whole world, he loved her so. He was on his way home from work when it happened. He went to work because people hadn’t been coming the past several days and we tried to go on as usual. He didn’t think about the missiles and continued to work.”

A neighbor who was friendly with Glikblich added that “he was a very industrious person. He left for work every morning at five, he was very attached to his family. The family is very nice and quiet. It’s just terrible what happened.”

3:30PM: Katushas have landed in Haifa, Nahariya, and surrounding areas.

2:22PM: Another Israeli chopper has crashed, possibly after hitting power lines. 2 pilots have been injured.

2:15PM: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Lebanon.

1:20PM: Here’s more on Arnie at the pro-Israel rally:

Governor Schwarzenegger told of his many visits to Israel, and recalled that his first trip abroad after being voted into his role was to Israel.

He offered support for the Israeli people and especially northern residents under attack and forced to sit in bomb shelters.

All of California stands by Israel in its just struggle against extremist Islamic terror organizations who oppose all peace arrangements, said the former Hollywood star.

1:08PM: 2 Kassams have landed in the western Negev. No injuries have been reported.

12:38PM: Or not. Reuters reports that the IDF has denied telling Metula residents to evacuate the town.

12:28PM: The IDF have recommended that Metula residents evacuate the area.

12:05PM: Ynetnews reports that small businesses in the north have sustained financial damages estimated at NIS 2 billion (approximately USD 450 million) since the beginning of the fighting with Hizbullah. This equates to about NIS 200 million (approximately USD 45 million) lost each day of fighting.

11:00AM: The IAF has destroyed 9 more Hizbullah rocket launchers.

9:52AM: 9 soldiers have been hurt in a battle with Hizbullah terrorists in the area between Maroun al-Ras and Bint Jbeil in south Lebanon. 2 have been hospitalized.

8:26AM: The Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has attended a pro-Israel rally in California.

8:18AM: More and more Arabs are speaking out against Hizbullah and for Israel’s actions. The latest is Ahmed Al-Jarallah, Editor-in-Chief of the Arab Times:

People of Arab countries, especially the Lebanese and Palestinians, have been held hostage for a long time in the name of “resisting Israel.” Arab governments have been caught between political obligations and public opinion leading to more corruption in politics and economics. Forgetting the interests of their own countries the Hamas Movement and Hezbollah have gone to the extent of representing the interests of Iran and Syrian in their countries. These organizations have become the representatives of Syria and Iran without worrying about the consequences of their action.

Recently Hamas kidnapped an Israeli soldier and bombed Israeli settlements with locally manufactured missiles. Soon Hezbollah followed suit, kidnapping two Israeli soldiers. Both these organizations claimed they had kidnapped Israeli soldiers to exchange them for Arab prisoners who are being held in Israeli jails. The fact that Hamas and Hezbollah gave the same reason for kidnapping Israeli soldiers gives us a glimpse their agenda, which is similar to the one followed by Syria and Iran in their conflict with the United States.

While the people of Palestine and Lebanon are paying the price of this bloody conflict, the main players, who caused this conflict, are living in peace and asking for more oil from Arab countries to support the facade of resisting Israel. With the Palestinian Authority close to collapse and the Lebanese government beginning to give up responsibility for what is happening in its territory, Saudi Arabia has been forced to come out of its diplomatic routine and indirectly hold Hezbollah responsible for what is happening Lebanon.

Without mentioning Hezbollah by name Saudi Arabia blamed certain “elements” inside Lebanon for the violence with Israel and said “it is necessary to make a distinction between legitimate resistance and uncalculated adventures adopted by certain elements within Lebanon without the knowledge of legal Lebanese authorities.” While reiterating its support for Palestinian and Lebanese resistance against Israeli occupation, Saudi Arabia has clearly said it is against irresponsible adventures undertaken by certain elements in the region without consulting the legal authorities putting all Arab nations at risk. The Kingdom has also said “these elements must take responsibility for their irresponsible actions and they alone should end the crisis created by them.”

This angry response from Saudi Arabia has politically isolated Hezbollah and Hamas besides holding them responsible for their actions.

This attitude of Saudi Arabia, which has been doing all it can to protect the Arab world from Israeli aggression, is enough to unmask the adventurers, who have violated the rights of their own countries and tried put their people under the guardianship of foreign countries like Iran and Syria. A battle between supporters and opponents of these adventurers has begun, starting from Palestine to Tehran passing through Syria and Lebanon. This war was inevitable as the Lebanese government couldn’t bring Hezbollah within its authority and make it work for the interests of Lebanon. Similarly leader of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas has been unable to rein in the Hamas Movement.

Unfortunately we must admit that in such a war the only way to get rid of “these irregular phenomena” is what Israel is doing. The operations of Israel in Gaza and Lebanon are in the interest of people of Arab countries and the international community.

The Lebanese government seems very quiet at the moment, last week they were making noises about involving their army if the IDF came onto Lebanese soil. Do you think Hezbollah is becoming very isolated?

Keep up the great work, it’s been really appreciated to get an idea of what’s really happening, as against the MSM’s pet story of the day.

I think this is the first time that the terrorists in Gaza havae been singled along with those in Lebanon.

I almost can’t believe that this editorial was written. I really do believe that the worm is turning. Everyone talks about the timing of Hiz. They couldn’t have picked a worse time than right after the bombings in India. The entire world is now disgusted.

Thank you IC for the link to this editorial.

Great work Dave, your updates are priceless, by the way is it just me or does it seem like the IDF is taking unnecassary risks in its ground operations. Why are they operating with so few forces, if they brought in overwhelming force they could capture these targets more efficiently. Why capture a target with a small force and then leave immiediatly. Why not capture it, hold it, and then withdraw after several days after you’ve demonstrated your strength.

It’s utterly depressing but it seems our esteemed Prime Minister has just not understood who we’re fighting and why. There’s really no explaining statements like this especially during the war. The man’s lost it.

Does anyone have any comments about this? From a blog on the washington post.

I haven’t seen pictures of Hezballah equipment in mosques so I won’t comment on that, but once again Israel is invading Lebanon. If the US is invaded by a superior army, I’m sure we would use any means possible to defend our country.

I think it is clear that Israel has a policy to hit back hard and hit back at civilians. Today IDF Chief of Staff, Dan Halutz, said that for every missle that hits Haifa, we will knock down 10 buildings in Dahiya (a suburb of Lebanon full of 12 story buildings). They believe that overpowering response will deter future attacks.

On the second day of the Israeli raids on Lebanon they targeted vehicle leaving the village nearest to the area where Hezballah captured the Israeli soldiers (I can’t remember the name) and killed twenty people fleeing the village. That was not an accident.

When Britain was fighting against the IRA in the 1980s they would not retaliate against attacks by killing 400 Catholics.

    Dia duit David,

I am totally for Israel defending itself against ANY terrorists and your government have the whole of my family’s and my support in this endevor.

However, I am an Irish/American and take great dissapointment in that you would even think and dare to compair the PIRA to these scum bags.

Do not make comments about things you obviously have no fully truthful information about!

After this ongoing conflict is over, I would be more than willing to educate you on the history and facts of the matter. I will state and educate you on one fact right now. WE were and have never been terrorists.

    Slan go foil,

    Rick

wow, israel is truly a nation of compassion. giving medical assistance to a woman their soldiers shot IN THE BACK while she was fleeing.

why wasn’t she able to escape the war zone sooner? oh, that’s right… every major road and bridge she could have used to escape was destroyed, leaving her to risk being bombed again while in a packed convoy of refugees, or gut it out in her home and hope she doesn’t get shelled/shot/bombed there (which she was).

“I wonder what the 61% would say if the IRA fired from Ireland rockets at English cities, including London.”

The british population lived through IRA terrorist attacks, as well as the london bombings of last year, and still do not favor such an aggressive response. Maybe that tells you Israel is on the outside looking in when it comes to world opinion.

During the IRA attacks no rockets were fired, but bombs were detonated in Ireland and London. However, no INVASIONS were launched, no AIRPORTS were destroyed, and no BRIDGES and ROADS were bombed.

Two different religions with differing political agendas for the same piece of land were battling, and after things got ugly, a POLITICAL solution was worked out.

The major difference between that situation and this one is that the terrorists weren’t arabs. And apparently that means they were worthy of being spared the horror of being shelled and bombed for 12 days.

  14. Anonymous says:

    Cameron,

I can’t tell if you are trying to be deliberately misleading, or just don’t grasp things. Israel also has been living through terrorist attacks, and did not start fighting Hizbullah like this until ROCKETS were fired at our CITIES. And I don’t recall the IRA firing rockets at English cities. It was a hypothetical question, and I don’t think you can honestly tell me the British public would not want their government to fight the terrorists hard if England was under attack.

When a nation is at war, it wants to win the war by defeating the enemy.

As for your constant rants about Israel’s military action, it is completely justified and aimed at stopping Hizbullah. Infrastructure has been targeted to stop the supply of arms to Hizbullah from Syria and Iran. Civilians are killed because Hizbullah has hidden their fighters, and weapons, amongst them.
