What a powerful speech by Tony Blair. Indeed the man truly gets it. Israel is fighting a war for the west, and all nations that value freedom and democracy. I would like to link this with my own situation. I come from a third world country that sadly, is still highly dependent on the guidance and support that 1st world nations like the U.S gives it. My people, NEED countries like the U.S. to keep our government in line. Our poverty is like that of many arab countries because we are stolen from, cheated, lied to, and killed by the government. But without the strong hand of the west, who are the watchdogs of the world, what would become of countries like mine? Even now I fear that my country will soon need International intervention for the extra-judicial killings of journalists, leftists, and activists who say anything against the present government.
My point is, when I think about what we might all be giving up by not facing this demon that is Islamic extremism, I am afraid. There are deeper implications for countries like mine which face terrorism of all kinds, apart from Islamic extremists. Yes, we have that too. The west cannot fail us. Your responsibility is not only to your nations but to the world, and I hope that Europe especially, comes to terms with this.
Israel CANNOT fail. The west CANNOT fail.

Just want to thank you for your liveblogging and for linking to us at We appreciate your support. Even though i disagree with your thoughts on the legitimacy of Israel's reaction, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

There is no peace, there will be no peace because only one side wants peace. Thats what you don't get. Do you really think that the people of Nazi Germany wanted peace in 1939, hell no they wanted war because they felt a grievance had been put upon them after WWI. The muslim people feel the same way. Propaganda from the last fifty years has given them this version of history and they believe their time to exact revenge in now. Add to it the horrible economic conditions within their countries while having one of the most valuable natural resources in the world, top it off with a religion which stiffles freedom and demands everyone in the world submit to it and add really-really corrupt governments which have cycled money into pointing their population's hate to the west and outside world and the powder keg is ready to explode. All is needed is a successful leader to bring it all together...a Hitler type. Muslims want to back a winner and will do so if they perceive success that is what has become so dangerous. Osama is perceived a hero because he gave it to the US...Iran's President is perceived a hero because he is standing up to the US...Saddam was considered a hero until the US took him out. The mistake the world is making is that peace can only be obtained once the war is ended and a victor declared, until this war gets a lot uglier that won't happen. You mention Churchill...he understood this more than anyone, the way to peace is through complete and absolute victory, other wise the war will continue. The US after crushing Iraq in 2003 should have swung around and brought the hammer down on Iran. IF this happened maybe we could be talking about peace in the not too distant future.

I fully agree. I believe the values that we share are supposed to be tolerance, an ability to live with others in peace and full equality in legal and practical terms. As Blair and Churchill said - don't let any extremists - FROM ANY SIDE - get between moderate and peace-wanting people.

Who are Israeli forward thinkers apart from Amos Oz? And what about forward thinkers from arab nations?

Our biggest problem is getting the people in the west who do share our values up off their fat bottoms. We've got lazy, we've had the good life for a long time now, we've ruined part of our populations through the welfare dependency cycle, we've allowed individual rights to reign over responsibility and our collective rights and responsibilities as communities.

I'd like to see an organisation form to actively campaign against this. There are great people out their, eg Fjordman, who can see the righting on the wall and who can put the words together well. Someone like Tony Blair who's a great speaker also. More people are out there like them, and there's many of us who would join and support this.

We need to get people off their collective butts now before it's too late for them to bother.

If Israel stops before overthrowing the government of Syria I fear the problems will be back in a few years.
Regime change is a better deterrant than destrying Armies. The guys who give the orders tend to take it more personal.

There is no need to attack until they leave. They could leave willingly and avoid attack.

I believe that is their policy for Israel and I see no reason not to reciprocate. I'm a big believer in equality.

Hamas has a slight problem dialoging with Israel. They refuse to talk with Israel because to them Israel is not a valid country.

Then there is one other minor problem:

Hizbollah and Hamas have constructed core ideologies based upon this Islamic theology of Jew hatred, which one can glean readily from their foundational documents, and subsequent pronouncements, made ad nauseum. Hamas further demonstrates openly its adherence to a central motif of Jew-hatred in Muslim eschatology—Article 7 of the Hamas Charter concludes with a verbatim reiteration of the apocalyptic hadith alluded to earlier:

“The Last Hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: `Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him’; but the tree Gharkad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6985).

It's worth pointing out that for all of their love of blending among civilians, the Hezbollahis sure love to wear snappy uniforms when they are on parade.
