Moron of the Day: Germaine Greer
With people from around the globe mourning the loss of Steve Irwin, and heaping praise on the man who brought joy to millions of people, feminist and fellow Australian Germaine Greer thought it appropriate to attack him.
In a scathing attack in a British newspaper, Greer said nature had taken its revenge on Irwin for his robust handling of Australia’s native animals.Mocking Irwin’s multi-million-dollar empire and his “Crikey!” catch-cry, Greer accused the world-famous TV star of placing the welfare of animals after his own interests.
“There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle,” she wrote in The Guardian.
“Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.
“Every snake badgered by Irwin was at a huge disadvantage, with only a single possible reaction to its terrifying situation — which was to strike.
“Easy enough to avoid if you know what’s coming.”
The author of The Female Eunuch hit below the belt as she accused Irwin of sending the wrong message to kids.
“The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn,” Greer wrote.
Despite the fact that Greer is completely wrong – even animal rights activists have applauded Steve’s life work – how utterly despicable to say such things. His family are mourning as they come to terms with the loss of a husband and father, for goodness sake!
I suggest Greer goes off somewhere and burns her bra..preferably while still wearing it.

Regardless of what one person might think of another – in this case – Germaine Greer vs. Steve Irwin, there’s always a more important aspect to consider – Respect! It’s not about being a “fan” or a “critic” of another person’s life’s work or their accomplishments – it’s the common courtesy one human being bestows upon another, especially in death. Mr. Irwin obviously is not around to comment and/or defend himself against her urge to erupt like a volcano now that he’s gone. Keep in mind, like any critic or person with a different view/take on a given subject, Ms. Greer’s comments are only “opinions” which, at the end of the day and at a very inappropriate time, don’t amount to very much. In summary, it all goes back to one word, “Respect”. That’s something Ms. Greer seemed to forget – and that’s not an opinion – that’s one of the “Golden Rules”.

What is your problem with Steve? Here a guy that has done a lot of work saving and studying animals then here’s Germaine criticising his work. sorry, but I agree with Greer. It is amazing how we all forget life before Steve’s death. I am sure we have all, at one point in our lives, some how imitated the stereotype of Steve and his yobo way of presenting. We all laughed, and we all thought he was a funny little idiot. Now he dies and we think hes a hero. It always happens, and death shouldn’;t change our ideas on someone. He not only encourages the sterotyping of the yobo Australia, he did so overseas. Lets not loose our heads because he died. Its a fact of life. Greer is simply detaching herself emotionally, and looking at things in retrospect. This is something everyone should do, and while realising the event is a tragedy that has left a widow with two children and a hole in the nation, we should also realise our feelings prior to his death.

We should have our say, and the fact is that the manipulation by the media has caused people to completely forget their previous opinions. Death should never change who someone was, or what we thought they were. Hey I did not put his family down. I am merely making social commentary on the way our perceptions change with death. I thought the way he was a consevationalist was superb, he bought rainforests just to save them. He was a champion. However, not everyone observed this when he was living – he was stereotyped, and portrayed Australians in a negative way by increasing on assumptions on the way we act/dress/talk. And we hated him for it – he was the subject of ridicule. Now we feel guilty or something, fall into the ‘hero’ trap and go off on a rant, condeming anyone who doesn’t share the same point of view (like Germaine for instance)

Here’s some additional advice after the fact: When you finish with the shrink, a facelift shouldn’t be out of the question – IF, that is, you can find a Doctor willing to soil his hands and a toxic waste site in which to dispose of the clippings. That done, AND providing you keep your too busy mouth shut, you should at least be able to walk the streets without hanging your head in shame.

I would NEVER put Steve Irwin in the same category as that black-wannabe-white MJ. I don’t even want to type his name it sickens me. I am AMERICAN and proud of it despite the ass we have in the White House. Regardless of the fact if we knew someone personally or through the media if we let them into our hearts we knew them our own special way. His death has impacted so many and it will for quite some time.
