Here's my take on the apparent inconsistencies of some American Jewish attitudes toward Israel. Remember the very close American presidential election of 2000 which came down to a few hundred votes in Florida? You know how many retired elderly Jews testified that the infamous "butterfly ballot" confused them so much that instead of voting for Gore they accidentally voted for the anti-Israel Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan? The answer is there were a lot of confused voters, Jews and nonJews, young and old alike. But this demographic (elderly, sun-drenched Canasta players in Miami Beach) who happen to be Jewish would, for me, explain the inconsistencies in the polling data. I can still remember one older gentleman (I'll call him "Murray") testify: "When I realized who I had (mistakenly) voted for (Buchanan) I felt like throwing up."

Love your podcasts Aussie Dave. Do more of them, please.

I'll agree to disagree with you on this one. He sounded like he was lying.

I understand why you are angry at Mel Gibson, but by your fisking of the Sawyer-Gibson interview, I think your emotion is clouding your judgment.

Most notably, why would Mel Gibson lie about not knowing the arresting officer (with a very Irish Catholic name!) was Jewish? This only makes him look worse. Now his "Are you a Jew?" question comes off as paranoia rather than honest inquiry. And if Gibson DID know that Mee was Jewish, then Gibson could have claimed his statements were made only to piss off the officer, rather than revealing his true thoughts.

There were many calculating things that Mel Gibson could have said, but didn't. For better or worse, he was being honest.
