At the end of the consumption line, no one cares if it came from California, Florida or Israel. Arabs can produce oil from anywhere from $0.50 a barrel (Iraq) to $2.50 a barrel (Saudi Arabia), so no matter how low oil gets it's not going to put them out of business. And the cheaper oil is, the more people will buy. What shale production does mean is that Arabs are able to produce much less volatility in the market since the production is more distributed. (Shale is everywhere, the US and Canada having the largest supply world wide). What is very cool though is that most oil extraction technologies, are around $12-17 a barrel, and that puts shale in even running with most oil processes world wide. That combined with the unreliability, volatility, and irrational behavior of Arab states should make US shale more desirable.

Oil is a standardized commodity, like frozen concentrated orange juice.
