Manipulating the Discourse

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Self-positioned poster boy for victimhood of nasty blogger behavior - Richard Silverstein - seems to think acceptable blogger conduct includes modifying reader comments and publishing them in their modified form, without any note as to their modification.

Below is a screenshot of a comment thread on his blog (needed since he could very well change the comments again). At the top is a comment I submitted, which as you can see is awaiting moderation by the author and is not visible to other readers of his site. The comment directly below it is my comment as it was published by Silverstein.

tikkun%20olam Manipulating the Discourse

By modifying and then publishing my comment, he is misrepresenting the totality of what I said. And even if you argued that the parts he omitted are not substantial, the mere fact that he omitted them is problematic, and illustrates that he had a problem with them.

This is just another example of his dishonesty and disregard for “netiquette,” as I pointed out last year:

I have corrected him on a number of occasions, pointing out errors in

his posts. Instead of doing the honest thing and

inserting/acknowledging the corrections via updates to his posts, he

just makes the corrections.

Furthermore, despite the fact that he habitually deletes comments of mine, he makes a point of leaving up the ones in which I pointed out his mistakes. The net result is to render my comments meaningless, since his posts do not contain the error to which I am referring.

By manipulating and modifying reader comments, as well as updating his own posts in a material way without any acknowledgment, he is being patently dishonest in an attempt to advance his arguments.

While I truly find Silverstein’s actual views reprehensible - not to mention poorly argued - it is his right to express them. What really bothers me is the dishonest way he is conducting the discourse, especially hypocritical considering his own gripe with bad blogger conduct.

Why am I bothering posting about this? Because I think it is important that anyone who happens to visit his site and read his posts and accompanying comments know about the inherent dishonesty. I think it also sheds light on how he can so easily espouse the views he does.

The Wrong Vehicle to Steal

Friday, April 27th, 2007

I just love this police mugshot, especially the exasperated look on dumbass #2.

mugshot The Wrong Vehicle to Steal
Background:
Three men who carjacked a motorist putting air into his SUV’s tires late last night chose the wrong vehicle to steal, state police said today.

After fleeing with the victim’s SUV from the A-Plus Mini Mart in Claymont, the trio headed up the interstate when the vehicle promptly broke down just over the state line on northbound I-95 and the alleged carjackers needed help.

A Delaware state trooper came to their rescue about 11:30 p.m., minutes after the Isuzu Rodeo was stolen, and called for back-up, while he tried to keep the three suspects at bay, state police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh said.

Mandatory JIBs Post

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

As you probably already know, the 2007 Jewish and Israeli Blog awards are well under way. While there have been a number of hiccups, including the hacking of the JIBs website by a Turkish (Islamic?) group, and a hacking by someone obviously in need of a life, people generally seem to be getting in the right spirit of things.

If you haven’t done already, head on over to the JIBs website and check out the nominated blogs. You might just find a new regular read.

If you do intend on actually voting and you enjoy reading this blog, I encourage you to vote for this blog in the following categories:
Best Overall Blog
Best Humor Blog
Best Pro-Israel Advocacy Blog
Best Right Wing Political Blog
Best Contribution / Blog that Made a Difference

My goal is to have Israellycool make it through to the finals in all of these categories, which will give it more exposure. And for me, that is what these awards are about. So if you agree that it’s worth spreading a bit of Israellycool love, you know what you have to do.

Celebrities Behaving Badly

Thursday, April 26th, 2007
Still on the subject of celebrities behaving badly, it looks like Snoop Dogg is not alone.

First up we have Hugh Grant. You may recall that last time he was in trouble with the law, his frank ‘n beans was involved. Now he’s in trouble again, but this time, his weapon of choice was baked beans.
hugh%20beans Celebrities Behaving BadlyHugh Grant has been arrested and questioned by police after a photographer accused the British actor of attacking him with a tub of baked beans.

Photographer Ian Whittaker told the Daily Star tabloid that he and Grant, 46, clashed near the home of the “Four Weddings and a Funeral” star.

Whittaker said Grant abused and kicked him on Tuesday before lobbing the beans. The paper printed photos of Grant with a plastic tub of food raised over his head.

Grant’s lawyers Schillings said an incident had taken place and was now under investigation.
baldwin2 Celebrities Behaving BadlyNext up we have Alec Baldwin, who’s telephone message to his daughter - in which he called her a “rude, thoughtless little pig” - was recently leaked to the media. Yesterday, Baldwin had this to say:
“If I never acted again I couldn’t care less.”
At last something coming from his mouth with which I can agree.

gere%20kiss Celebrities Behaving BadlyAnd last, but not least, we have Richard Gere, who offended millions of Indians over a week ago when he swept a popular Bollywood actress into his arms and kissed her several times. Now an Indian court has ordered his arrest for the act, saying it was an obscene act committed in public. In response, Gere’s furry little friend has given itself up to Indian police.*

* Will I ever get sick of Richard Gere gerbil jokes? Perhaps, but I’m not there yet.

No Snoop for You!

Thursday, April 26th, 2007
The question is not Who let the dog out? but rather who will let him in?
snoop-dog No Snoop for You!Controversial US rapper Snoop Dogg is being denied entry to Australia after failing a character test, the federal government says.

The cancellation of the rapper, record producer and actor’s visa means he will not be able to appear at the MTV Australian Video Music Awards this weekend, as planned.

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said Snoop Dogg was being issued with a notice of intention to cancel his visa after he failed to pass the requisite character test.

Snoop Dogg, 35, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, pleaded no contest to felony gun and drug charges in the US earlier this month.

“The reality is in relation to this man, that he was given a warning the last time, he has a whole string of convictions, and just two weeks ago I was told he was convicted on a number of charges again and sentenced to three years imprisonment on two, and three years imprisonment on another, with five years probation and a suspended sentence,” Mr Andrews told Macquarie Radio.

“He has been denied entry into the United Kingdom because he was caught with others causing affray at Heathrow Airport (in London)

“He doesn’t seem the sort of bloke we want in this country.”
Which begs the question: how the hell did this guy get in?

Israeli Aggression

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

With practically the entire country celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day) with a barbeque, it looks like the police really got into the spirit:

More Vatican Shame

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Yesterday, The Vatican spoke out against forms of “terrorism with a human face.”

The Vatican’s second-highest ranking doctrinal official on Monday forcefully branded homosexual marriage an evil and denounced abortion and euthanasia as forms of “terrorism with a human face.”

Today, The Vatican was meeting with the “human face” of terrorism.
