Blogging the Conflict: June 4th-5th, 2007
I must admit to finding it increasingly difficult to maintain these updates, but I will try when possible. Let’s see what has happened so far today…
Depending on which news outlet you rely upon, the palestinian terrorists fired either 3 mortar shells and a Qassam, 6 mortar shells (and here), or 3 Qassams. I am amazed that even our media cannot work it out, but perhaps even they are suffering from lethargy brought on by the predictability of daily attacks. Either that, or they are just damn sloppy. In any event, there were no injuries reported, and that is the most important thing.
Elsewhere, palestinians took to opening fire and throwing stones.
Meanwhile, the IDF sent ground troops and more than 15 tanks backed by helicopters into the Gaza Strip, pushing about a kilometer into palestinian-controlled territory. Troops searched houses, arrested a number of suspects, and excavated areas used by gunmen as hiding spots. IDF forces, along with the Shin Bet and Border Guard troops, also arrested a PFLP activist, in Ramallah.
In other news, the Justice Ministry used disproportionate force in slamming Amnesty International’s latest one-sided, and error-prone report on Israel (they couldn’t even spell “Israel”), the Defense Ministry used disproportionate stupidity in turning down a US-made anti-rocket system that could protect Sderot immediately, and Egyptian police seized 1-1/2 tons of explosives in central Sinai, destined for the palestinian territories.
Updates (Israel time; most recent at top)
10:48PM: Lynn writes about a very good cause:
Standing Together is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Israeli soldiers on active duty. Being totally funded by donations from Jews throughout the world, Standing Together acts as a bridge between Israel and other Jewish communities, creating a feeling of unity and support.Standing Together’s activities over the last three years have brought much happiness to thousands of Israeli soldiers, who never imagined that a Jew overseas was concerned for their welfare. Now is the time for you to join us and become a part of the Standing Together family, so that we can truly Stand Together.
Standing Together’s latest project is a campaign urging people in Israel to buy challah from Sderot bakeries, which are in danger of going out of business. See details below and at their website. http://www.stogether.org/ You can email them at info@stogether.org for more information.
Employees in the Nablus education directorate office were shocked to hear shooting on Tuesday coming from inside the office of the director, Lutfi Yassin. When they rushed to the office, they found an armed member of the public; there were no casualties or injuries.Yassin, 50, told Ma’an, “An armed man broke into the office and shot inside it when we refused to give him approval to sit the ‘Tawjihi’ [end of school] exams because he did not meet the conditions for such exams.”Eyewitnesses said that the angry man repeated shooting in front of the department when he was forced to leave by other employees. After the incident, Yassin closed the directorate for several hours in protest against what happened. He described the attack as an uncivilized act and urged the security bodies to ensure protection of the public and the government departments.
Foreign ministry backed PR action to send resident of Sderot to Paris with the remnants of Qussam and Quds rockets doesn’t seem to work.
Mignews (in Russian) reports that the media didn’t care, only a few of them bothered to send their representatives to the press conference.
