Blogging the Conflict: June 2nd-3rd, 2007
Catching up on the news after a relaxing Sabbath, I see that there seems to have been “only” one Qassam fired at Israel today. It landed in a residential neighborhood of Sderot this morning, damaging 2 buildings, and causing 4 people to suffer shock. Islamic Jihad took responsibility for it, which is not surprising, considering that we turned one of their senior terrorists into worm fodder on Friday evening.
For the second time in two days, IDF troops have reportedly shot 2 palestinians near the border fence with Israel. As was the case yesterday, the palestinians ignored the IDF’s orders to stop, as well as the warning shots. Palestinian sources claim the two were killed, and were not terrorists, but rather workers at a garbage dump near the fence. The IDF also shot a palestinian attempting to attack Israeli soldiers with a large boulder near Ramallah (he was subsequently taken to an Israeli hospital for treatment), as well as a palestinian gunman in Nablus.
In other news, a senior Hamas leader has stated Hamas may consider a one-year cease-fire with Israel (they evidently want a lot of time to replenish their weapons and supplies), a Gaza-based radical Islamist group has threatened to behead female TV broadcasters if they don’t wear strict Islamic dress, and the UAE has transferred $80 million to the palestinians.
9:58PM: About that internal palestinian ceasefire..
Over the past 24 hours, security chaos in the Gaza Strip has escalated as incidents of abductions, gunfire and forced entry into houses were rife.
9:00PM: From the No Sh*t Sherlock Department: Here’s a real headline from the Jerusalem Post: Report: Palestinian with knife meant to stab Jews
8:05PM: I have been busy all day without any time at all for blogging, so I’ll sum up what I missed:

Netanyahu is a brilliant speaker. He hits the nail on the head. I only can hope he is not just preaching to the choir and people in England are actually listening.

Thanks for the news update. It’s Motzei Shabbos here in the US, and the first news/blog post I read was your update – thanks, and keep it up (if you can).
About those poor cows in Lebanon – where’s PETA in all off this?
Abominable. Or was that a-bomb-in-a-bull ….
Hello, I am “buenaprensa”, the owner of a spanish blog named “Buena Prensa” (good press), which deals about the arab-israeli conflict. I would really appreciate if we could exchange links.
Best wishes from Argentina!

It will have – probably – little effect. I write as someone sitting, right now, in one of Britain’s universities. Most people are unaware or resigned about this: or actively supportive of it. I’m afraid that being anti-Israel is not only uncontroversial, it is strongly orthodox in Britain, and dissenting views are ignored or marginalised. Anti-semitism is at the highest it has been in the UK (in terms of attacks) since the dark and brief days of the British Union of Fascists in the ’30s. This is largely because of our growing Islamic population, but helped by an establishment so suffused with anti-Israeli sentiment either out of old-fashioned ignorance, or old-fashioned bigotry.
I believe in the British tradition like Bibi does. Lots of people do; unfortunately most of them aren’t British. It is time our useless little nation changed its name; as the Roman Empire’s centre is now mere Italy, so today’s Britain so utterly fails to resemble the great nation and people of old, that it would be helpful for all if it was called something altogether different.
There will be many more such dark days; dark weeks, months, and years ahead, as the lights go out, and the plug is pulled, and all the remaining vestiges of genuine Britishness die out, with only an Leftist-Islamic husk of a place left. It has long been on this path. Its disgusting betrayal of Israel after the War was but one of its beginnings: a hideous mixture of cowardice, malice and duplicity. The British spine long since folded.
The whole problem re: Academia is captured in this one fact: a large number of Oxford University colleges serve only halal meat, and were caught by the student press having done so for years, even when they have only one or two Muslims there at a time. The establishment have made their peace, and not with Israel, but her enemies – a considerable number of whom live within our borders.
