Celebrating 9-11

It is no secret that the palestinians celebrated the September 11 attacks. And despite the PA’s early attempts to suppress this fact, they have since not hidden their joy over the attacks – at least not in their own daily newspaper, which is not intended for outside consumption.

Thanks to Palestinian Media Watch, the outside gets to consume:

The Palestinian Authority continues a long tradition of celebrating the 2001 World Trade Center terror attacks by publishing cartoons in its official daily that glorify Osama Bin Laden and the attacks, or mock the suffering of the U.S. This year’s cartoon shows Bin Laden smiling while making the ā€œVā€ for victory sign with two fingers in the shape of the burning Twin Towers. The PA daily that published the cartoon, Al Hayat Al Jadida, is owned by the PA and controlled by the office of Mahmoud Abbas. The only text on this cartoon is “Exclusive to Al Hayat Al Jadida,” which means it was prepared specifically for the official Palestinian Authority daily.

Do yourselves a favor and read the whole article. You will be even more appalled that the US government is funding and supporting the PA.

Update: And they’re not the only ones. Meet James Brolin, otherwise known as Mr Barbara Streisand.

Actor and husband of Barbra Streisand, James Brolin, offered radio listeners a “Happy 9/11″ Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the U.S., during a promotional appearance for his new movie “The Hunting Party.”

Brolin was being interviewed on the Chaz and AJ Show on WPLR, a New Haven, Conn., radio station.

During his interview on the morning radio show, Brolin’s mention of tracking down war criminals prompted Chaz to note the significance of the day, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Brolin, sounding surprised at mention of the anniversary, responded by wishing the radio pair, “Happy 9/11!”

The transcript follows:

Brolin: So, you know, it’s, it’s kind of a parody on how come we can’t catch war criminals with all our sophisticated stuff, you know.

Chaz: That’s something we’ve been talking about a lot today on the show for obvious reasons, the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Brolin: Right. Oh yeah. Oh, Happy 9/11!

[Long silence]

Chaz: Well, that’s kind of a weird thing to say.

Brolin: [Laughter] I heard silence.

Chaz: Yeah.

Brolin: Well …

Chaz: Well, we’re right outside of New York. I mean, I know people …

AJ: Right.

Chaz: … who lost family members so … I don’t know … we don’t say Happy 9/11 around here.

Brolin: Celebrate the day, right?

Chaz: Yeah, well, we kind of commemorate the day by remembering the people who were lost and the families that they left behind.

Brolin: I understand …

Chaz: Yeah.

Brolin: It’s a horrible situation how they’ve been left behind, even now, by, uh, anybody who might, uh …

Chaz: I think you’d be better off talking about this movie.

Last year, while appearing on “The View,” Brolin, noting his parents and grandparents had been Republicans, said he had since “started thinking for myself.” He then encouraged viewers to visit a website that argues the World Trade Center buildings fell as the result of a controlled demolition.

  1. Desider says:

Like dude, I think the Yanks celebrated “Mission Accomplished” despite it being kind of a mistake that got us into this mess. How many think the real solution is to turn Iraq into glass? I don’t see any big American sympathy each day when 20 or 30 Iraqis get wiped out. I remember a day when almost 1000 Iraqis died in a bombing panic on a bridge – not much mention in the mainstream press. I don’t recall conservatives being sympathetic towards New Orleans Katrina victims. I don’t see much sympathy towards people being waterboarded, kicked to death, put on planes for countries that torture, or just held without charge for years. So enough of the “9/11 is a holy shrine forever and ever”. People make stupid poor taste jokes about every atrocity, from the flood to the holocaust. The Americans have paraded around 3000 (not-just-American) deaths on 9/11 enough to make everyone sick of it. Other countries have their atrocities and tragedies too. The Brits aren’t so tender on their July 7, India, Spain, Bali, Turkey seem to still cope after their bombings. Israel loses how many to bombings every year? Palestine loses how many to Israeli attacks? Every day a Mexican dies trying to cross the border. Over 40,000 Americans die on highways every year. Every day 3 US soldiers die in Iraq. 300,000 dead in the tsunami. But each year on 9/11 we have to bring in the Dalai Lama and the Pope and Giuliani for a candlelit hand-holding Kumbaya session. Screw it, we got our not-quite-direct revenge in Iraq, now let’s let it rest.

And yeah, I can’t understand people thinking a government that consistently lies to the public and conspires behind its back about Iraq, attorney firings, energy commissions, science research, etc., would actually lie and conspire behind its back about 9/11. Really, it’s almost as scandalous as second-guessing a general.

Your “Pot calling the cattle black” article was much funnier.

  2. Desider says:

I should mention the 1 million in jail, mostly for drugs, and the “compassion” we see is “bend over for Bubba” jokes.

  3. There was nothing funny about this post. Likewise, your comment, which shows just how morally bankrupt you are.

  4. Desider says:

Well, I don’t see many motherlodes of moral riches around.

Yeah, it’s a shame that the only thing Palestinians can rejoice in is the destruction of the WTC. (Especially given the efforts Clinton made to try and make some progress). But I don’t really expect Palestinians to be happy with their lot or cheering the world on the other side of the pond – they’re not quite hooked into the financial establishment. And there hasn’t been much additional effort to bring them into the fold since 9/11, so I’m not sure why you’d be surprised they still celebrate it.

And while the world goes to hell in a handbasket, the worst thing in the world is that a liberal made a smarmy remark on the 6th anniversary of 9/11? Sorry, that’s moral irrelevance. Again, hundreds of thousands incarcerated for drugs, sitting in prison for years, and we make stupid prison rape jokes. Dozens of US soldiers die each month and 10 times that many are wounded, but as Rep. Boehner states, “It’s a small price to pay…” Isn’t that much more callous than a stupid 9/11 joke? But 9/11′s our baby, we have to dote over it.

  5. I don’t agree that the palestinians should be held to a lower moral standard because of their predicament, especially considering they are largely to blame for their predicament.

Celebrating 9-11 is despicable, no excuses. Although you seem to have plenty, which speaks volumes about your character.

  6. Desider says:

It’s certainly easier to hold them to higher moral standards when I’m living in luxury.

I’m sure no one ever celebrated the dropping of the atomic bombs.

I’m sure Texans never celebrated the stealing of Texas.

I’m sure no one ever gleefully played cowboy lording it over the Indians.

I’m sure no one ever celebrated Sherman’s march to the sea.

With all those despicable wars and atrocities last century, somehow 9/11 this century is the apple of everyone’s eye. Despicable? Ah yes, so many despicables to categorize, so little time. Did you know some 4 million or so died in the Congo in the last 10 years? Most Americans don’t – too busy being traumatized by 9/11.

  7. It’s like talking to a wall…

Are you familiar with the term “moral relativism” by any chance?

  8. Desider says:

Yeah, it’s a term conservatives often throw out when they want to freak out equally over matters 1000x different in magnitude.

Of course in an idealistic universe when we’re all Gods, the worries of the smallest gnat will be as important as those of goliaths. Until then, of course, size matters.

Plus, if the US wants to remain the greatest superpower, it better learn to take a punch without flinching, much less whining like a baby. Take a look at how the Brits responded to July 7.

  9. Desider says:

I think also that “moral relativism” might still preclude equating Schadenfreud with actually carrying out the 9/11 terrorist attacks. (Not that Palestinians haven’t carried out numerous terrorist attacks of their own, but hopefully you get the point – they didn’t attack the US, they just applauded it).

And while Brolin’s joking was juvenile and in poor taste, you can find 5-10 items of similar poor taste on Fox News on any given night, just to name one source. I guess I should worry about every single annoyance or worry about none.

  10. Tom says:

I take it you’re a liberal, Desider. I think it’s in poor taste to take shots at the conservative party over an issue — Brolin — that just isn’t related. What Brolin said was stupid and callous. It can’t be excused, nor should it be used as a platform for taking shots at FoxNews and (apparently) conservatives.

  11. Joshua says:

Problem is, what Brolin said IS being used as a platform to take potshots at liberals in general, and that, to a large extent, refers to me (excepting, of course, the issue of Israel, I’m a hard rightie on that). And while Desider is being a bit of a b****rd, he is right about Fox News. Take, for example, how they treated Chris Crocker. It’s ok to make fun of his rant, but what Fox did was make fun of his sexuality. Not cool. (well, ok, liberals do it too with (M)Ann Coulter, but by her hypocritical stances, she kinda has it coming). And the sneering tones taken by the anchors and reporters (mind you, not the opinion shows, but the actual news reports) toward people they don’t like (read: Democrats).

That said, I have heard some shows say “Happy 9/11″, albeit in a bit of a joking tone as if to say that they want the day off or that we should take it back from the terrorists and throw parties on the day. But I suppose that’ll have to wait until Moshiach comes.

  12. Desider says:

Well, Tom, Brolin & Streisand may be important in Hollywood, but I’m sure I’ve gone the last 2 years without hearing Brolin’s name at all, and I read quite a number of blogs & newspages.

I find it even less important than Charlie Sheen discovering WTC conspiracies, and that’s on the far side of irrelevancy. We can then discuss a Colorado professor who likes making provocative comments. Or perhaps a Berkeley student who holds leftist views.

Whereas people who do have large audiences, from Rush to Malkin to Coulter to Hannity to Josh Goldberg say stupid and callous things every day, and manage to maintain a large following by doing it.

These people have manipulated the whole security and foreign policy debate based on exaggerating irrelevancies for the last 6 years. Palestinians celebrating 9/11 will undoubtedly turn into, “See, I told you they’re a danger to us (the U.S.)” in the hands of a media wingnut – “Stay the course in Iraq”. 9/11 is distended to mythological proportions just to take advantage of the “conservatives strong on security, liberals weak” political point. Certainly for guys who follow Middle East politics closer you’d expect that the American spoon-fed “Arab politics for Dummies” approach is stock full of blunders that the Israelis have for the most part gotten past.
