It won’t comes as news to any of you that anti-Semitic actress/dried-out prune Vanessa Redgrave has just bailed out a suspected al-Qa’eda operative released from Guantanamo Bay.
The man, Jamil el-Banna, 45, is suspected of helping run a cell called the Islamic Alliance, recruiting people to fight jihad in Afghanistan and Indonesia. That’s him pictured on the left, and I can only assume that Redgrave’s affinity towards him stems from her history of supporting terrorism, as well as her anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist proclivities, rather than his resemblance to Gandalf.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Don Feder summed it up in this 2004 FrontPageMag article.
There are many Israel-haters on the Left – but none more persistent, or rabid, than far-Left British actress Vanessa Redgrave. The mummified Marxist is a longtime enemy of the Jewish state.
In 1977, Redgrave did a “documentary” titled “The Palestinians” that showed her in a PLO training camp, dancing as she waved a rifle over her head. (Doing the fedayeen two-step?) In accepting an Oscar for Julia (1978), Redgrave railed at the “Zionist hoodlums” (an expression Soviets propagandists applied to those protesting the treatment of Russian Jews).
In 1980, Redgrave proclaimed, “The State of Israel must be overthrown, there is no room for such a state.” In December 1981, she told the publication Arab Perspective, “The Zionist state is the cause of conflict and violence in the Middle East.” The establishment of Israel in 1948 was presumably preceded by millennia of peace and brotherly love in a region renowned for harmony.
In the same interview, Redgrave declared, “I am against the racism and violence of the Zionist state of Israel,” then adding (almost as an after-thought), “but I also oppose anti-Semitism.” On the other hand, she isn’t on record actually condemning a specific act of anti-Semitism in the Arab world, or anywhere else.
Her statements last week were fully in keeping with a quarter century of evil lies and a steady stream of venom directed at the only democracy in the Middle East.
The Communist (with a capital-C, see below) was in Jerusalem as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. (Only the UN would consider this creature an emissary of goodwill.) After the standard propaganda tour of the West Bank, Redgrave told reporters that Israeli soldiers use the skulls of Palestinian children for target practice.
“An Israeli sniper will shoot at a classroom full of Palestinian children who are in their uniforms and scarves,” Redgrave informed the press.
“Any Palestinian mother or schoolchild knows that a schoolchild who is dressed in a uniform can be and is frequently shot in the head – not in the chest, not in the legs, in the head.” Redgrave wasn’t talking about collateral damage. She was charging the Jewish state with deliberately engaging in infanticide.
When asked for her source on this updated Blood Libel (Jews murdering non-Jewish children), Redgrave cited a documentary by the UN Relief and Works Agency (”Huda’s Story”). The child, who lives in Gaza, “was indeed wounded in the head, but by a ricochet bullet,” according to UNWRA’s spokesman in the Gaza Strip. No one knows whether the shot was fired by Israeli forces or Palestinian gunmen.
From this, Redgrave concocted a lurid lie of Israeli snipers peering through their scopes at rooms full of little girls in uniforms, trying to decide which of the kids they should kill for fun.
Speaking of the murder of innocents, in May, Palestinians ambushed a Jewish convoy in Gaza. After her car was forced off the road, Tali Hatuel (age 34) and her four children were shot and killed — not with a sniper’s rifle but at close range. As a finishing touch, Palestinian assassins shot the pregnant woman in the stomach, to ensure that her unborn child did not survive.
Redgrave is, to put it mildly, a piece of work. A leftist who makes Michael Moore look like a Republican, she is Noam Chomsky in a dress – Goebbels with an upper-class British accent.
A longtime member of Britain’s Workers Revolutionary Party – which proclaims on its website, “We are Marxists and fight for the principles founded by Marx, Engles, Lenin and Trotsky” – she left in the course of one of those periodic Trotskyite splits and helped to found another proletarian-vanguard, The Marxist Party.
True to her principles, Redgrave never met a Communist butcher she didn’t adore, and never encountered an act of Western self-defense she wasn’t prepared to denounce.
In 1962, she became one of the first celebrities to visit communist Cuba, where she was rumored to have had an affair with Fidel Castro. (How old is Sean Penn, anyway?) In 1967, she took out a full-page ad in the United Kingdom, denouncing U.S. bombing of North Vietnam.
In the 1980s, she was active in the nuclear freeze movement and protested American policies in Central America, especially our opposition to the saintly Sandinistas.
Prior to the 1991 Gulf War, Redgrave demanded “withdrawal of U.S., British and all imperialist troops from the Gulf.” In fairness, she also called for the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein from Kuwait — but was prepared to allow that occupation to continue indefinitely rather than apply force.
Last year, she was a regular at antiwar protests in London. (Said she of the effort to remove Saddam Hussein: “The British and American governments are about to destroy all hopes for peace anywhere in our world, forever.”) She also posted 50,000 pounds bail for a Chechen accused of complicity in the 2002 Moscow theater siege, where 116 died.
In June (in the course of delivering a petition to 10 Downing Street), Redgrave charged that Bush is operating a “concentration camp” in Guantanamo, where prisoners are routinely subjected to “torture.”
There is no record of Redgrave ever denouncing Islamic terrorism (other than the pro forma, “of course I don’t support terrorism, but…”) or condemning the Cambodian genocide, Vietnamese re-education camps, North Korean nuclear blackmail, or Castro’s treatment of political prisoners. Such would not have served the interests of the revolution.
Besides accusing Israel infanticide, the sexagenarian actress attacked its security fence. It’s “a barrier higher than any wall I’ve seen and even higher than the Berlin Wall,” Redgrave insisted. Would that be the enclosure built by Marxists to keep their slaves from escaping, Vanessa?
“I see a government (Israel’s) that is deliberately trying to destroy the peace,” Redgrave raved.
And here’s footage from her infamous acceptance speech for the 1978* Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Incidentally, Redgrave won the Academy Award for her role in the movie Julia, in which she played a Jewish anti-Nazi activist. Needless to say, given her real-life support for the world’s new Nazis, many were opposed to her playing this role. And for her part, Redgrave is still misusing the Holocaust for her own insidious agenda. This is what she said after she helped ‘Gandalf’ el-Banna:
Miss Redgrave said: “It is a profound honour and I am glad to be alive to be able to do this.”
She added: “Guantanamo Bay is a concentration camp. It is a disgrace that these men have been kept there all these years.”
No, the only disgrace here is Redgrave and her lifetime’s work of helping the bad guys.
* not 1977 as some others have erroneously posted
Just a quick reminder that although this is still very much my blog, I am not the only contributor. Elder of Ziyon has been contributing regularly to this site, with the very occasional appearance from Brian of London. You can see who authored a post by the large Avatar and author label under the post title.
Yeah, I know, it sounds obvious, but some of you have been missing the distinction, judging by the number of times I have seen one of Elder of Ziyon’s great posts falsely attributed to “Aussie Dave.”
Being the fair taskmaster blog patron that I am, I won’t stand for this injustice any longer!
So please pay careful attention in future.
As you were.
There’s hitting a home run, and then there’s hitting the ball out of the park. Greg Sheridan of The Sunday Telegraph does the latter with this editorial.
This past week in Israel, where I have been staying for a couple of weeks, there began what should be a historic process: negotiation of a final settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.
This is the outcome of the recent Annapolis conference in the US.
Three leaders - US President George W. Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmood Abbas - have committed to finding a final settlement within a year.
They have not committed to full implementation of this final settlement in that time, merely to the conclusion of an agreement on what the terms of the final settlement will be.
This covers areas such as the amount of territory an independent Palestinian state will get; the so-called right of return of Palestinian refugees and their descendants (which Israel interprets as a right of return to a new Palestinian state and the Palestinians interpret as a right of return to Israel itself), and the arrangements that will cover Jerusalem.
The obstacles to any settlement are enormous. For a start, the Palestinian Authority has no jurisdiction over one-third of its population, which lives in the Gaza Strip under the control of the Islamist terrorist organisation Hamas - an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.
But even in the West Bank, the real power of the Palestinian Authority is very limited. Several West Bank cities are ruled by warlords, not the Authority.
Indeed, Palestinian leaders cannot travel safely in all their own cities and are not ready to take over security in most of their cities from Israeli security forces.
In truth, the Palestinian Authority does not have functioning state institutions.
Outside donors, including Australia, are set to pump an enormous amount of money into the West Bank to try to improve the quality of life there.
This is designed, in part, to strengthen Mahmood Abbas and to show the Palestinians that life on the moderate path, in the West Bank, is much better than life under the extremist path, as in Gaza under Hamas.
The Palestinian Authority, however, shows no signs of re-establishing control of the Gaza Strip, and it is inconceivable that Israel would allow the creation of a Palestinian state that did not control both the West Bank and Gaza.
Many people around the world tell Israel to withdraw to its 1967 borders. Two years ago, Israel did pull out of Gaza - and the result was that Hamas took over.
Every day now, Hamas terrorists fire rockets - aimed at civilians - from Gaza into Israel.
Eventually, one of these rockets will kill a large number of Israeli civilians and there will be a huge Israeli military response inside Gaza.
Whatever Mahmood Abbas thinks of this, or Hamas (some of whom have pledged to kill him), he would be forced to make an ultra-nationalist response - and that, in itself, could kill the peace process.
Further, the Annapolis process requires the fulfilment of the conditions of the so-called Road Map, the very first of which is that the Palestinians stamp out terrorism and stop attacks on Israeli civilians.
There is no sign the Palestinian Authority can do this, or even that it really wants to do this. Its educational materials are full of hatred against Israel and incitement to terrorism.
And that is the fundamental problem. Neither the Palestinian leadership, nor most of the surrounding Arab states, has really come to grips with Israel’s right to exist at peace behind secure borders.
Until that happens, no agreement is likely to work on the ground.
So, what should have been an epic week may prove only to have been just another footnote of failure in the long saga of failure in the Middle East.
(I found this article via the Jewish Issues Watchdog blog, written by a fellow Western Australian who recently visited Sderot with several members of the Western Australian government. I look forward to reading his account of the visit, and what impression of Israel and our security situation the visit made on the visitors).
From JTA:
An Israeli army rabbi is under investigation for putting a mezuzah up in an off-limits area of Hebron. The rabbi of the military’s Judea Brigade was photographed this week putting up a mezuzah in the casbah, or old city of Hebron, accompanied by Chabad supporters.
The Hebron casbah, from where many Palestinian residents have fled during the past six years of violence, is off-limits to Israeli civilians out of concern that settlers might try to squat in its buildings.
Many Israelis say casbah properties were originally Jewish-owned and should be reclaimed.
“This gate is one of several gates through which people enter the casbah,” Noam Arnon, a Hebron settler spokesman, told Israel Radio on Thursday. “Chabad wanted to put up a mezuzah, a very welcome act. This, of course, did not bother anyone, particularly not the Arabs.”
Following protests by left-wing Israeli groups, the military top brass said the rabbi was under investigation and that the mezuzah had been removed.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Rabbi Yossi Nachshon, a Chabad emissary in Hebron who helped organize the ceremony, said he did not understand the IDF’s extreme reaction.
“The media and the IDF have totally blown the whole thing out of proportion,” said Nachshon. “We affixed the mezuza in a place where IDF soldiers are stationed near a Jewish neighborhood. We do these types of things all the time. On the same day we affixed mezuzot in various settlements around the Hebron hills.”
Nachshon said that according to Jewish law there was no obligation to affix a mezuzah near the casbah. However, he added that a mezuza was believed to offer protection against physical dangers.
Nachshon said that a Jewish settler had been killed near the scene of the contentious mezuza.
So it was just a gesture of support for the IDF, a symbolic wish for their safety, not a political act.
But the left-wing reaction was furious:
Peace Now issued a statement calling for Rabbi Peretz and the soldiers who participated in the ceremony to stand trial.
Knesset members also weighed in on the contentious move. MK Ran Cohen (Meretz) said that “this is a thuggish act vis-à-vis Palestinians who have not been able to live their lives for years. Even worse than that, this time it was not only done under IDF auspices but by soldiers who were engaging in severe political provocation.”
MK Avshalom Vilan (Meretz) called on Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi to convene a discussion on the matter and deal with the perpetrators “to the fullest extent of the law.”
“A uniformed rabbi who participates in an act with lawbreakers disgraces the IDF and should be punished,” said Vilan.
Notice anything missing?
Even though it has been a full 24 hours since this event occurred, I have not seen one mention of outrage from any Arab or Muslim about this supposedly outrageous act. The people who riot at the drop of a hat, who obsessively follow Israeli media to find things to offend them, have not said a single word about affixing a small scroll with words of the Torah to the entrance to the old market. I have seen nothing in the Arabic press nor in their English-language press.
Israel’s left wing is now more offended on the Arabs’ behalf than the Arabs themselves are. Their eagerness to co-opt Arab outrage for their own leftist purposes show that their goal is hardly protecting Arabs as much as it is showing their seething hate for the Right - and religious Jews.
The Jerusalem Post reports on a worrying - but hardly surprising - trend in England.
The name Mohammed is expected to become the most popular name in England and Wales by 2008, the Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday.
The name, according to the report, was second only to Jack in 2007, which has been top for the last 13 years. 6,772 boys were called Jack and 6,387 were called Mohammed or a variant.
“High birth rate among Muslim families” is the reason cited by the report for how Mohammed will be the most popular boy’s name by next year.
Although Mohammed was ranked 17th, the name’s position would be numbered second if all 14 variant spellings of the name were taken into account.
The Telegraph found that of the 3,009 babies called Mohammed, the most popular spelling was Muhammad (1,595), followed by 903 Mohammads, 429 Muhammeds, 349 Mohameds, 39 Mohamads, 12 Muhameds, 11 Mohammods, nine Mohmmeds, eight Mohamuds, seven Mahammeds, six Muhammeets, five Mohmmads and five Muhammods.
Muhammad Anwar (heh - Aussie Dave), professor of ethnic relations at Warwick University, was quoted by the newspaper as saying: “Muslim parents like to have something that shows a link with their religion or with the Prophet.”
Except teddy bears, I guess.
Now don’t get me wrong; I have nothing against a growing Muslim population per se. It’s just that when you factor in the proportion of the growing Muslim population which is acting to reduce the non-Muslim population, there’s real cause for concern.
Update: The Jerusalem Post story includes this picture and caption:

In case you thought the Post had gone to the trouble of finding 4 babies named Mohammed/ Mohammad/ Muhammed/ Mohamed/ Mohamad/ Muhamed/ Mohammod/ Mohmmed/ Mohamud/ Mahammed/ Muhammeet/ Mohmmad/ Muhammod, and lined them up for a photograph.
What’s going on with the world’s terrorists?
First, there’s this:
On Islam’s most important holiday, the leader of Gaza’s Hamas government appealed Wednesday for a cease-fire with Israel and said his people—battered by Israeli military strikes and international sanctions—are greeting this year’s feast with “tears in our eyes.”
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s spokesman said there could be no deals with Hamas until it renounces violence and recognizes Israel, though one Cabinet minister said Israel might consider outside mediation with the Islamic militants.
—-
The appeal from Ismail Haniyeh, who heads the Hamas government in Gaza, came in a phone call to an Israeli TV reporter, said Hamas spokesman Taher Nunu. It followed a two-day air assault by Israeli forces that killed 12 Gaza militants, two from Hamas and 10 from Islamic Jihad.
Israel “should stop its attacks and siege,” Nunu said. “Then a truce would be possible, and not unlikely.”
Hamas officials said they were working with other militant groups to try to stop the rocket fire into Israel and also sent overtures to Israel through unidentified third parties.
—-
Speaking at a sparsely attended Wednesday prayer gathering at a Gaza soccer stadium for the beginning of the Eid al-Adha festival, Haniyeh blamed Israel for the sour atmosphere, referring to Israel’s latest air assault.
“The Palestinians greet the feast differently from the other Muslim nations—with martyrs, with members of resistance dying, because of the crimes of the Zionist occupation,” he said. “We greet it with tears in our eyes and sadness in our hearts.”
And now this:
David Hicks described Osama bin Laden as “lovely” and trained with al-Qaeda a month before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a court was told.
—
Mr Berger said in a May 2001 letter to family, Hicks wrote: “By the way I have met Osama bin Laden 20 times now, lovely brother, everything for the cause of Islam. The only reason the west calls him the most wanted Muslim is because he’s got the money to take action.”
Looks like they’re getting a little soft.
Here’s an idea. How about you guys all get together for a group hug?
It’s, like, a work of art, man.
At the grave : A Palestinian woman mourns at the grave of a relative on the first day of the Muslim feast of Eid Al-Adha at a cemetery in the West Bank town of Jenin. (AFP/Saif Dahlah)
By the way, if you stare at the image long enough, you will see the picture of a man holding a gun. Heck, you should see the man holding the gun anyway. That is the “relative” being mourned by the palestinian woman.
I think I should coin a new word: Eid-iot.
Arabs have been unanimous in rejecting the idea of Israel being a “Jewish state.” Their reasons are that, by definition, a Jewish state would be discriminatory against Arabs and Muslims.
If you define “Jewish” in purely religious terms, that would mean that any state that defines itself as “Islamic” is, by definition, equally guilty of this discrimination. If you define “Jewish” in ethnic or national terms, then any state that defines itself as “Arab” would be equally guilty of the racism that Israel is being accused of.
Time to check out the official hypocrisy of Israel’s critics, and note the deafening silence towards this supposed Arab and Islamic racism:

Ynet reports:
Livnat bill: Every student must visit museum
Proposal by MK Limor Livant would require every Israeli pupil to visit museum, attend two cultural events every year. Former education minister notes: ‘Not all students have such opportunities, especially in the periphery.’ Students’ parents to foot bill
So, seen any good theatre shows lately? A new bill proposed to the Knesset by MK Limor Livant means all Israeli students (grades 1-12) would have to do just that. Livnat’s bill would require all primary and high school students to attend three separate “cultural events” annually, including one obligatory trip to a museum.
A “cultural event”, as defined by this bill, is any culturally relevant theatre show, musical performance, or dance recital. A committee established by the minister of education will convene annually to compose a “cultural basket”, or list of cultural events and museums that students can choose to attend.
As for funding, the state will subsidize half the cost of attendance at these events, and local municipalities will chip in as well, but students’ parents will have to foot the remainder of the bill through school fees.
Justifying her proposed bill, Livant writes: “The arts and culture are an indispensable part of the educational process, helping to mold and inspire the citizens of tomorrow. Unfortunately, the Israeli educational system has done little as of late to invest in the arts, seriously compromising the future of art and culture in the state.”
Meanwhile, the Ynet reporter mispelled “Livnat” no fewer than 3 times.

IDF Uses Kibbutz Members As Human Shields
Six female soldiers suffered from shock when a Qassam fired from the Gaza Strip Tuesday night landed near an IDF position in the Kibbutz Zikim area of the western Negev.
