He didn't expect the party to get out of hand, that was a result of his own stupidity: I heard that he had posted a general invite on the Internet. As for guts, he's afraid to face his own parents, even though he knows he'll have to, eventually. In the meantime, he won't either gather up enough bravery to issue an apology. Sticking to your guns, when you have nothing to say, is just the path of least resistance. I don’t think he has guts, quite the contrary.
