James, you are right. And every giant casts a shadow. The political scene in Israel is still recovering from Arik Sharons sudden disappearance. Like him or not, but he sort of held a government together that had to steer through dire straits, namely the Oslo War (Intifadat al Aqsa). Personally I don't miss him much as the Likudnik that he was.But in comparison, the fragile Kadima government is a mess.

Anyway, as I see it it wasn't the great generals or the great leaders alone who formed modern Israel's history: I was the people of Israel, the immigrants, and their contributions. Especially the kibbutz movement contributed and still contributes major assets in resources, know-how and man power. Moshe Dayan always knew this and he knew how he could win people's hearts even while his image as a military leader suffered from failures.

How the situations should end without a bang or a whimper?
I don't think that there is only the option of a bang and whimper. Probably there will be a lot of whimpering, a handful of smaller bangs here and there, some screaming, gesticulating, rolling heads, reluctant handshaking and then business as usual.

A big bang would simple be too expensive - for everyone. Nobody seriously wants that. Especially not the rich Gulf states which might suffer a lot of colateral. And the Gulf states have quite a bit to say in this conflict and also in the situation concerning Iran.

I hope Israel does prosper, and maybe the *current* (i.e., mid-hudna) situation isn't historically bad, but historically, you had giants for leaders -- Begin, Dayan (now there's a man), Golda Meir -- I used to be able to name more, but now you've got Ehud "Lurch" Olmert and Zippi "the Wonderdog" Livni, and unlike Meir, these bumblers won't resign. How do you see the Palestinian, Lebanon, and Iran situations playing out? If they don't with a bang, how do they end with a whimper?

James,
I know, the situation may look rather grim today. But in comparison to other stand-offs in Israel's young history it is a low-intensity conflict. Not that this helps the people who live in the south under constant rocket fire. But let's put things into proportion.

You might remember stories about the Yom Kippur war. THAT was a horrible time with many difficult days when the funerals just wouldn't end.

But don't underestimate Israel and don't let yourself be drawn under by delusive reports on the overall situation here. Or better yet, come and see for yourself. Your chance of being killed in a terror attack (tfu tfu tfu) is less likely than to win in Isralotto. And by the way, from what I heard about crime levels in larger American cities it doesn't sound too safe to me. Also, if you visit, go for a trip to the north. You will find lots of decent and friendly Arabs here who happen to be also Israeli citizens. Mony of the Druzim here in this region even fight in the Israeli Defense Forces - not against them.

To make a long post short: Check the facts and see it with your own eyes before jumping to conclusions. And don't be depressed about who you are or where you are from. And remember, Israel will still be there one day if you change your mind.

James, its a matter of self and self respect. My family basically assimilated into American culture. I was never raised in Judiasm. Heck I went to Church until I was 14 years old. But, in my 20s I slowly began to find out more about my heritage and the religion of my grandparents (on my mom's side of the family.) When in my mid 20s I was terminated from my employment because I am Jewish. I stood up and I sued. Now, over a decade I am seriously considering making the aaliyah. I do not let the actions of other dictate my own actions.

Never been to Israel - my 1980 Bar Mitzvah there was called off b/c of the situation at the time, though I have a friend here who was born in Israel and lived in Haifa 2 summers ago. I've given up on Judaism not to protect myself against genocide (one of my family names is on the Holocaust museum wall in the *real* Amsterdam Holocaust musuem (i.e., not the Anne Frank all-sorts-of-oppression-we-condemn House)) but because I've had it with a people who won't stand up for themselves. You tell me why my attitude is wrong -- besides saying it is. What is Israel going to do to stand up for itself? Why am I wrong that there won't be Israel in 5 years or so? The Arabs won't attack from north, south, east, and from Iran via missles? I'd love to be wrong. It'd be great if Arabs fulfilled Golda Meir's prophecy, but I don't see that happening.

Do you know someone in Need of a yeshua? Kapparos!

There is a new service out on the internet at www.Kaparot.com
that’s right Kapparos all year round, for the sick, before or after an operation, parnasah, shiduchim, having children, healthy children, and for any other reason, just submit the names,

They will notify you after it’s done (within 48 hours),
With the time & by whom it was performed, and the proceeds go to tzedukah to the poor in Jerusalem.
