I had to hustle and get promises from the publications. I don't know if they do this any more. After two trips, I no longer qualified. It really was thrilling. Of course, "real" journalists got better deals, but I'm thankful for the opportunities. They subsidized my flight in exchange for my writing about the trip (I needed to go to visit my parents in NY) in various publications and my blogs.
