I meant, if the conversion is not Orthodox, you can get in – but you could not get married here. My wife's Rabbi (Sen. Lieberman's, when he is in Washington) speny quite a bit of effort getting his conversions accepted. Ironically, it would probably have been a lot easier for my wife to use here Conservative conversion to get here.

BTW, although my wife's Rabbi has a reputation for good conversions, I agree with the policy; there is no control in the U.S. and anyone can go to some charlatan and get a conversion or a divorce.

Legally here it means that they have a Jewish mother, a conversion (although if Orthodox, it has to be a good one, I think – and if not, try getting married!), and have not embraced another religion, although the Good ol' Bagatz seems to be reversing itself on the last bit.

But the point is that they themselves have renounced their right to return – and in the case of Singer, I say, Good Riddance. If you ask how one can be the exact opposite of a Jew, I would say advocating infanticide would do it – Tacitus the Roman historian actually made fun of us for that.

Who decides who is and who is not "a real Jew?" I don't mean to be challenging or insulting–I really want to know. Is it a matter for a geneologist or some rabbinical council or Israel's Ministry of Absorption? Or is it up to the individual of how they self identify. Seems like some pretty complicated matters to consider with some tangible rights and priviledges at stake.

Most of the signatories of that letter are people whose connection to any Australia Jewish community is that their parents were just of the Jewish faith. I always love it when these letters start off "as a jew" as if they are the only jews who are allowed to have an opinion that counts and matters. Well as asajew (note one word) I wish they would just bugger off and live in some of the Islamic countries which they seem to admire for a few years.

Of course, that is nothing – he is for infanticide, and thinks killing an animal can be worse that killing a person. (I believe a certain German has similiar ideas.) The man is, to put it bluntly, evil. I would love for there to be some mechanism to make sure that is forever banned from this country. I’ll take Hamas over him, anyday.

The worst is that the man is given a platform in “respectable” places; the New York Times recently did this in regards to the American health care debate.

I am really surprised that Dave has never heard of him, but perhaps Autralians are too intelligent to pay attention to him.
