No, Jim from Iowa, you will NEVER hear ANYTHING like that in the media, where terrorists are called "militants", retaliation is called "attack" and announcing the end of a 10 building month band voluntarily accepted by Israel, at the behest of the US, in exchange for nothing is called "provocation & insult" to the US.

(It was just an example, one where I believed Arafat was involved. I could not remember exactly which massacres were linked directly to the PLO, and I am too old to be in the habit of Googling. I do recally that Yasser Arafat ordered the murder of two American diplomats. But at the end it is Rabin's fault for recognizing him, not the U.S's. The U.S. waited for Israel.)

Why it a bad thing if Americans aren't concerned about the Middle East, particularly given the media? The trick is to counter-act the negative stuff, and just breathe a sigh of relief when people aren't interested (more or less my approach to haredi issues, in theory, at least).

I kind of LIKE voter apathy. Let the people who care enough to know something vote; let those who have no clue stay home. It also means that things really aren't too bad.

I think I see your larger point that Palestinian violence leads to (perversely) international recognition for the Palestinian cause, although I'm having a hard time connecting the dots between the murder of Leon Klinghofer and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

I value Israellycool for bringing me important information like this stoning incident. You folks in Israel are living with it everyday. But me here in Iowa, do you know what kind of reaction I get from friends and family when I bring this up? Initially I get blank stares followed by a rolling of the eyes. Take it from me, most Americans, unfortunately, don't seem to care about the Israel/Arab conflict. What can I do about this?

(I was in Rubin Shul, Yeshiva University, June '83 when someone, after a couple of tries, managed to get a stone through the window. I didn't bother reporting it. Wasn't two weeks, IIRC, that I was in the Kosher restaurant down the block, and a squad shot machine guns thorough the window. Luckily this wasn't the Middle East; they shot at an angle, so I'm still here. (Three separate incidents, Washington Heights, probably a power play by a drug gang. It was in the papers.)

Gain? Look at what they've gained! Pressure on Israel, of course. "Stop the cycle of violence", right? Ask Obama. Do you rememeber when the PLO threw Leon Klinghoffer off of the boat? It gained them almost a state, and unrelenting pressure on Israel to give up eavery last millimeter.

My Dad's neighbor was a Rabbi who was chosen to work on the Dead Sea Scolls. True scholar, no airs, the least extreme person you could find. On his piano was a HUGE stone. This was thrown at his son-in-law, who threw himself over the grandchldren, and shielded himself with – his JACKET.

There is a "cycle of violence". If you don't respond, it gets worse.
