Israeli Arab On Israel Being Called An “Apartheid” State

Meet Rania Fadel, an Israeli Arab who belongs to StandWithUs and takes real exception to Israel being characterized as an Apartheid state.

It is worth listening to people in the know – like Rania – as opposed to those who either have no idea or don’t let the truth stand in the way of their hatred for all things Israel.

  1. A refreshing bit of truth. I wonder if the US media will find her or others like her?

Stand With Us does great work. I have participated in some of their activities.

    1. Just as there is no crying in baseball, there is no puking in the comments section, especially when I'm trying to eat a bagel.

  2. well the argument for Apartheid in Israel focuses on the separation barrier built in the occupied west bank, jew only roads, and the different treatment of jews and non-jews in the occupied west bank. Haifa (where this girl is from) is in israel and nowhere near the west bank, she probably hasn't even seen it herself.

Also even in israel, jews and arabs don't really get treated equally, even if it may appear so, for example arab schools don't get the same funding as jewish schools, land ownership is restricted for arabs, arabs tried for murdering jews get a much harsher punishment than jews murdering arabs, not to mention the religious discrimination Law of Return and the profiling against arabs in airports.

The idea that "arabs live in israel better than many arab countries" points to another problem in the arab countries, and fails to address the question of arabs IN israel, it's almost as saying "its better to be a second class citizen in israel than a first class citizen in an arab country" which i think reinforces the idea that arabs are second class citizens in israel

Maybe she doesn't feel discriminated against, or she doesn't mind a little bit of discrimination, but there are many more in israel (arabs and jews) who testify that arabs are indeed being treated like second class citizens and that israel practices apartheid crimes in the occupied west bank.

    Peace to all

  3. The separation barrier was built to protect Israeli lives from suicide bombers. You can argue about its route, and Palestinians have taken the issue to the Israeli high court several times and won, but its got nothing to do with apartheid. There are no Jew only roads. There are Israeli only roads for security reasons which Israel Arabs can travel on, so again not apartheid. And Israelis (Jews and Arabs) and Palestinians are subject to different laws on the West Bank as Palestinians are not Israeli citizens, and the West Bank is not part of Israel. You may not like the occupation, and neither do I, but its not apartheid.

As for your comments about life in Israel proper, you’ve said nothing that is different to the complaints of minorities in other countries, which af course is not satisfactory and we need to improve. But only last week an Israeli Arab High Court judge was one of the 3 judges that sentenced our Jewish ex-President to a jail sentence for rape. Need I say more about the rediculous allegation that Israel is apartheid?

  4. Could it be that Rania supports her country because, unlike any Arab women in the rest of the Middle East she has equal rights? Could it be she is proud of Israel because honor crimes against women are prosecuted? Could it be that Rania supports her country because she can openly criticize the government and not be shot like in unarmed citizens Syria or raped like female protestors in Egypt? Could it be that Rania realizes that though she is part of an ethnic minority and yet her language, culture and religion have always been recognized, unlike the Kurds of Turkey? Is she grateful that despite enormous problems, she is not being forced to flee like Christians in Egypt and Syria and Lebanon and Gaza and ….

Of course there are social problems in Israel, just as there are here in America. Minorities in the US, Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans and many others face many forms of discrimination, even though they are against the law. However no one argues that because of these problems, America no longer deserves to exist.
