What Did Vittorio Arrigoni’s Tattoo Mean?

As far as I am aware, I was the first to notice the tattoo and ask the question ” What does it mean?” And frankly, I kind of suspected it did not say “Peace” or “I love Jewish people.”

Commenter Ruth informed me it said “Al-Muqawmin” – “Those who Resist” – while others claim it said “Muqawama” – “Resistance.”

Given what we know about the use of the term “resistance” in palestinian circles, I think the message is clear. Arrigoni was no “peace activist.”

Not that this wasn’t clear already.

  1. It says "Al Muqawamiyah" you idiots. Nobody here reads arabic? It means The Resistance. He was a peaceful man. He did nothing violent his entire life. He resisted peacefully. He's a true peace activist and you are liars.

  2. in the italian political culture, the word “resistance” it is strongly linked with the left party. The rebellion against fascism, from 1943 to 1946 was the “resistenza”.
So, arrigoni tatooed in arab calligraphy a word linked with his political background.
    that’s all.

By the way, nice tatoo. The traditional arab calligraphy it’s tidy and full of mystical. 🙂
