Surreal Time Sunday

Ugandan dictator Idi Amin and his forces stage a mock assault on a small hill representing the Golan Heights.

Taken from the 1974 documentary General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait (French: Général Idi Amin Dada: Autoportrait).

  1. I remember the pictures of him with his medals attacking ISrael at the UN, prominent among them a set of wings. IIRC, they were Israeli Air Force wings, given him in some training program.

      1. Tzanchanim are which Chail? Terms like "air force" don't really work here, since we basically only have one major military serrvice, of which the navy and air force are parts. A bit like the old Army Air Corps.

        1. The difference being that the jumpers wing has a parachute in the middle. Amin was in fact trained to jump in Israel but for some bizarre reason it seems he wore a copy of the wings handed out to those members of Ugandan regiments who had qualified under the British.

It should be pointed out that very few Kings African Rifles (of which he was a member) actually were able to qualify. Amin was noted by a number of British officers as being particularly thick.

The AAC still exists BTW, I'm actually in it as a Lynx helicopter pilot. Unless you are talking about the USA, in which case they copied us. Boo!

I'm really impressed the Ugandans had working Shermans in the 70's. I wonder if they're still around?
