The BBC on Thursday morning announced the Nobel Prizes for literature, physics, and chemistry, careful to mention that the first was from Sweden and the three physics winners were from the U.S. They were curiously silent on the origin of Schectman. Then, in a discussion with the Guardian science reporter, the interviewer disdained Schectman’s discovery as having “no practical value.” The Guardian writer, bless him, indicated that was often the case, and uses would be found in the future. The BBC has clearly not changed — just more subtle about it’s antipathy to all things Israeli.

Dr. Schectman got a front page write-up in the Iowa papers because of his professional associations with Iowa State University and the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s lab in Ames, IA. Iowans want to claim a little bit of the good doctor and consider him a source of pride as well.
