A few days ago was the tenth anniversary of International Year of Volunteers.
Each year, approximately 4,000 Jews and non-Jews from 30 countries fly to Israel and volunteer in the IDF for several weeks.
G-d bless them.

My Dad and stepmother did this for a couple of weeks. (They had to sleep on opposite sides of the hall!) My Dad was one of the youngest in his group; I think the groups may be by age. A lot of them did this all year; many were not Jewish, I think one from Germany. They had to return home once a year, as they didn’t have residency. Their “commanders” were three young Russian girls, about a quarter their age.
They packed medic kits. My Dad still proudly wears his Sar-el pin.
Sar-el is always my first stop on every trip to Israel. Three weeks sleeping on a 2 cm thick foam rubber mattress, wearing a uniform that’s guaranteed not to fit, eating cucumbers and tomatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner–AND LOVING EVERY SECOND!
