Best. Valentine’s Day Gift. Ever.

Everything old is new again…and again.

Two weeks ago, 97-year-old Maria Bertha Holskon made aliyah from Argentina. Not to be outdone, 95-year-old Phillip Grossman and his & 93-year-old bride Dorothy just made aliyah from Baltimore… on Valentine’s Day.

The Torah says Abraham was 75 years old when he left his native land of Haran and set out to make his home in Canaan. But he was a spring chicken compared with the couple who arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport on Tuesday.

Phillip and Dorothy Grossman, ages 95 and 93, respectively, are probably the oldest married couple ever to immigrate to Israel.

The couple from Baltimore, Maryland, who have been together for 71 years, were greeted at the airport by their family and immediately taken to their new home in Jerusalem.

“Phillip and Dorothy are probably the oldest olim couple that the State of Israel has ever absorbed, and they are proof that it is never too late to fulfill your dream and make such a significant decision in life,” said Erez Halfon, vice chairman of Nefesh B’Nefesh, a group that facilitates Jewish immigration to Israel. “We congratulate them and wish them many more years of health and happiness living together with their family in Israel.”

Mazal Tov!

  1. D’ya think they came to escape Obama Care’s death panel?

    • Jim from Iowa says:

Those two are so adorable and the story is so heartwarming, I’ll just ignore your swipe at our president. No I won’t! Two Jews from Baltimore–hmm, what are the chances that they actually voted for Obama and every other Democrat for the last 70 years?

    • juvanya says:

      I might…to escape Obamas police state panel…

      • Jim from Iowa says:

You’re beginning to give me reason for concern, juvanya. Did you see John Stewart’s take on the religious right’s over-reaction to HHS’ revised regulations on contraceptives? It was hilarious, but also exposed the Right’s overheated rhetoric on the subject. So back off on that death panel crap, already. Or are you ready to switch your support from Ron Paul to Sarah Palin?

        • rulierose says:

er, that “death panel crap” was confirmed by none other than The New York Times, which admitted–after Obamacare had been safely rammed down our throats–that in reality, some passages in the bill were indeed describing something very like the “death panels” that Sarah Palin talked about.

since you quote Jon Stewart (even tho’ you can’t spell his name), I assume you’re the kind of person who still has respect for the NYT. so this should carry some weight with you.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and it’s really amusing and good to see that there are still lots of active pro israeli and pro jewish Jews left out there.
It’s nice to see that this couple are doing aliyah at such an “advanced” age, but what does it have to do with the goyish “holiday”? This so “unjewish”…has totally no significance in our heritag…
just my two cents (more like two dollars)…

    • Thanks for the kind words, Tom. I hear what you’re saying. I’m not a particular fan of the holiday, myself, but “Valentine’s Day” was probably a very popular search term when I posted this (late night on Feb 14), and you never know what might lead new readers to this here blog. Plus, it was an easy hook for American readers.

      • tom says:

true. didn’t think of that point…

      • tom says:

oh and I forgot to mention how great your name is! actually all of: Challah, Aussie, etc. I’m still waiting for the “Zionist Killer Jeans Tailor”… ;-) Something like “Zion Levi Strauss”

      • Jim from Iowa says:

A sea creature who actually uses the word “hook” as a positive action. You must be a real disappointment to your undersea family and friends.

    • rulierose says:

wait, Valentine’s Day is goyische now? why, because it originated with St.Valentine 2 gazillion years ago? that’s like saying Christmas is a pagan holiday because it originated with the winter solstice rituals. Israel and America are both young countries: we can enjoy lots of holidays in the New World and leave the Old World connotations out of it.
