When The Dictator Met The Israeli

Israeli journalist Nimrod Dvir thought it was just another press conference when he was sent to cover the new movie ‘The Dictator’ for the Israeli entertainment show ‘Good Evening with Guy Pines,’(yep. That’s the name) but during that press conference, The Dictator, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, pulled down his golden gun and shoved it into Dvir’s crotch.

With all of the above, when Dvir presented himself as “Nimrod from Israel” to ask a question, it was almost inevitable that Baron Cohen would put on a show. “He asked me if I’m Jewish and I said I’m very Jewish,” Dvir tells Abbanibi. “Then he smiled, asked me to get closer to him and got up from his chair to meet me. He pulled out a golden gun, point it to my crotch and asked me to prove that I’m Jewish.”
Dvir played along with Baron Cohen’s little show and asked him if he really wants to see it, and when Baron Cohen said yes, Dvir said that he don’t want to show it because it’s so big. “He said that it’s probably very small, because if it was big I’d show him. So I unzipped my pants and let him peek inside, with all of the cameras flashing. So he shoved his gun in there.”

The Times of Israel today featured Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League complaining about Sacha Baron Cohen’s humor playing off of anti-Semitism. Foxman argues that without clearly labeling the jokes as jokes, people won’t get the jokes, and in turn, will become more strident and justified in their anti-Semitism. I don’t buy it. I agree there are a lot stupid people in the world who won’t get the jokes in “The Dictator” but I doubt a disclaimer or a public service announcement explaining the jokes would do any real good for this crowd, anyway.
I’m not a huge fan of Foxman.

I don’t know how the critics are going to rate the movie, but if it gets good reviews, I wouldn’t be surprised if the adjective “Chaplinesque” is used to describe Cohen.
