The Soccer Player

Israel today released hunger-striking palestinian terrorist Mahmoud al-Sarsak, commonly referred to as a “soccer player” because of his membership in the palestinian national soccer team.

Here he is today back in Gaza:

Mahmud Sarsa

Palestinian football player Mahmud Sarsak (C), who staged a hunger strike of nearly three months while in Israeli jail, flashes the sign for victory as he celebrates his release from Israeli prison in Rafah town, in the southern Gaza Strip on July 10, 2012. Sarsak staged a hunger strike of nearly three months to protest his detention without charge under Israel’s “unlawful combatants” law. His detention order was due to expire or be renewed on August 22. SAID KHATIB/AFP/GettyImages

Yep. Just a soccer player with no terrorist connections. As much as fellow hunger striker Khader Adnan can be called a “baker.”

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck but plays soccer, it is still a duck.

Israel would have an easier time with its critics regarding these guys if they just CHARGED them. Why did they hold him for three years without formal charges?

It’s called ‘administrative detention’, when people are hurling missiles and mortars at you, blowing themselves (and you) up, shooting at you, kidnapping you, threatening you, indoctrinating their people with hate against you, then it’s a perfectly legal and proper response.

Practically every country in the world does it and nearly all for the same reason. That being, when you are engaged in asymmetrical warfare, when your enemy is secretive and blurs the lines of traditional conflict, when you have good evidence against them intending or being part of a group that wishes to hurt or damage your nation and for which there is not necessarily a legal remedy, then it is simply best to lock them up whilst you either build a case, wait for them to crack or simply until you find a way to neutralise the threat they pose.
