  1. I did not see it (it was at 1 AM here), but the impression I had was that Romney was not trying to “win”, but just to appear reasonable. His people feel they have the momentum, and are playing defense. In that case, they must have polls we don’t see.; because from RCP it seems that whoever officially “winss” gets the mmenetum. (However, the electoral balance has switched to Romney, if you don’t count the toss-ups.)

It’s funny how the news reports go here, it’s all “Obama won the debate”. I think the American reports are probably more naunced. Of course, Western journalists are basically a club, and they tell each other what to think.

  2. P.S. There is no deadlock here. All of the polls show the center-right/religious block winning. Labor is back, Kadima is finished. Of course, the actual coalition talks may yield a different result.

The main thing is we get a day off!

  3. Sorry, one more thing. What was all this about “having our back”? Is the US honestly saying they would intervene if we were threatened with destruction? This is hard to believe, nor do I think we are particularly interested in that.

The history of the US and Israel is not only didn’t the US have Israel’s back, but they wouldn’t ever let Israel win a decisive victory. Of course, this was during the Cold War, when the USSR forced the US’s hand.

Just to the review the history. Of the for wars of extermination against Israel:

1948: US neutral (USSR allied, at least de facto).
1956: US antagonistic (France and Britain allied).
1967: US officially neutral (anyone allied?).
1973: US technically allied, but determined to “teach Israel a lesson”, resulting in a large number of deaths and almost a tragedy.

Israel has had only One reason it survived, and it isn’t a foreign country (or the IDF either, for that matter, although it certainly helps).

  4. This was Obama’s best debate of the three and Romney’s worst. I have no idea what Romney would do as president on the world stage. The only Romney doctrine I could make out from this debate is that Romney wants to get elected. This will be a close election, but I think the Romney momentum is over with this “me too” debate performance.

      1. How would you describe Romeny’s frozen fake smile? I think it’s the expression he has perfected when he’s telling people that they’re fired. At least that’s my interpretation. The guy is dripping with insincerity.

Except that there’s still 50,000 troops in Iraq. We call them advisers. Except that fully ONE THIRD of all casualties in Afghanistan are by the people we’re there to ostensibly train and support. Except that not only Libya, but Egypt and Yemen in the same day were attacked. Except that the US standing in the Arab world is LOWER than during the previous administration. Except that about 8% of Israelis think Obama ‘has their back’. Except that Obama’s favorite ruler in that part of the world is neo Ottoman Islamic Fundamentalist Erdogan who imprisons more journalists than the whole world except for the other two greatest friends of Obama – Russia and Venezuela. Except that Obamas administration’s relationship with Israel is technically, as bad as it could be w/o having to demote the ambassador to a lower level posting and consists, operationally, of browbeating the country and cancelling all military and diplomatic events. Except that Obama doesn’t and can’t admit that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem. Except that Obama ABANDONED our ally in Georgia. Except that Obama was forced to bribe the government of Uzbekistan with billions of dollars to permit our planes to land there. Except that fellow NATO member Turkey upbraided the US for involving itself in Libya or talking about Syria. Except that now it’s too late to do anything about Syria because the ‘opposition’ IS al Qaeda and fellow Salafists now. Except that America’s relationship with the EU states is at it’s lowest point since the 1950’s. Except that Obama openly supports illegal dictators in Central America in countervention of those countries laws. Except that Obama’s relationship with Canada drove them straight into China’s arms. Except that Obama’s dealings with Mexico amount to treating the drug cartels like a rebel uprising of a breakaway people’s republic. Except that Obama has, with the exception of some YouTube worthy efforts in Uganda, completely abandoned Sub Saharan and Sahel Africa including all of East Africa, the Congo, Mali, Sudan and Somalia. Except that other than doing nothing, Obama’s assistance or normalization with Burma after decades of oppression is non existent. Except that any and all dealings with North Korea have been frozen in time circa 1994. Except that relations between Japan and China are the worst they’ve been since WW2 and Obama’s ‘pivot to the east’ consists of nothing anyone in the administration can point to as a result or even an intent of a result. Except the only two public endorsements of foreign leaders Obama has received are from Russia and Iran.

  6. Romney was playing “prevent defense,” look presidential and statesmanlike with no gaffes, and in this limited way, he succeeded. Obama scored some good points, but whether he punctured Romney’s armor remains to be seen.

    1. I hope he didn’t try to use a bayonet. Apparently he didn’t know they’re still in use.

Supposedly in Ohio Romney was considered the winner. The Romney campaign is ignoring everything but the battleground states.
