actually, it’s worse than that, Jim. race is SOMETIMES mentioned–when it’s a minority attacked by a white person (or a “white Hispanic,” our new category of skin color, invented by the New York Times especially for the Trayvon Martin case). the other way around, tho…never.

I don’t know about Israel, but reporters on the crime beat side of journalism have to tread very lightly on issues of race and ethnicity here in America. Age, gender, height/weight, clothing and location and nature of crime(including graphic accounts of violence) are all reported regularly. But not always race/ethnicity, even when the police are asking the public for their assistance in apprehending the alleged criminal. I know there is a reluctance to report such things because the media don’t want to be charged with incitement and guilt by association. But I want all the relevant facts, including race and ethnicity.
