Cinematic Strings: “BDS Movement Extreme And Counterproductive”

UPDATE 14:15 20th Feb 2014: Please see the new email from Alex to Yossela. You won’t believe what the company did next… 😉

Last night Alex from Cinematic Strings left the following comment on yesterday’s second post:

Hi Yael,

Just an update. We realised that our own stance had been discriminatory, and that was not something we meant to do. We have given the discount to the artist concerned and in fact we have emailed him today and he is happy to work with us. We have agreed to provide the discount to every student regardless of their location, and after several discussions and further research, we have withdrawn our support of the BDS. We have done this because, while we still support open dialogue aimed at achieving peace and equality, we now consider the aims of the BDS movement to be extreme and counterproductive.

Thanks for your time.

Kind regards,

Alex

We here at Israellycool are delighted with this statement. We hope some of the persuasive arguments against the BDSM, presented here and elsewhere, got through. If Alex would like to expand on what caused him to change his views, we’d love to hear which arguments against BDS he found most persuasive and we’d be happy to publish his thoughts here.

Today’s BDS Movement is rotten to the core. Its methods stink of vile Jew hatred and the goals of its leaders are rarely honestly expressed. This case was a good opportunity to underscore this. When exposed to the light, BDS against Israel (and only Israel) is an act of hatred against all Jews.

By all means express views about Israel: even negative views about where where some of us choose to live. If, however, you can’t back this with up with some understanding of the real nature and geography of Israel, you’ll be called out on it. If you are Jewish and you care tremendously, move here, vote and make a difference.

If you want to help the Palestinians, I suggest you put pressure on their leadership to stop violence and the promotion of hatred to their children. Almost every single measure Israel takes is to counter the hatred pumped into Palestinian kids. If one thing can truly matter more than anything else, this evil corruption of youth must end. Boycotting Jewish owned businesses (especially ones providing jobs to Palestinian workers) is about the stupidest thing you could ever think of doing.

It’s clear the pressure Israellycool kicked off was very persuasive. Overnight one of Australia’s largest political commentators, Andrew Bolt, wrote up the story clearly expressing the problems with denying a discount to an Israeli:

For the company to say this decision “is not in any way directed at you personally” is to actually explain one of the offensive things about it. Yossela is not being judged as an individual but as an Israeli, and specifically a Jewish Israeli. (Would the ban apply to him were he an Israeli Arab?) This is the tribalism of the Left – a tribalism that strips us all of our individuality and our individual worth.

Moreover, when that tribalism is then put into the service of a movement aimed at only one side in a conflict involving at least two parties, the other of which uses terrorism and preaches a religious hatred of its enemy, we must ask what truly lies behind this BDS movement. It smells like something very old and putrid.

All this comes back to my favourite thesis: BDS will fail because ultimately, in most cases, it will hurt the boycotter more than Israel. BDS against Israel is morally wrong and for this reason it is not widely acceptable. As more light is shone on the methods and motivations of these people, their message will be increasingly rejected by upstanding people.

UPDATE 14:15 20th Feb 2014:

Hi Yossela,

I’ve just checked the coupon, and it seems to work ok, so that’s strange. I certainly don’t want you to have any problems with a credit card payment, so I have generated a new coupon, which will allow you to receive the product for free. I hope you accept this as an apology on our part, and are able to enjoy using the library in your music…

Many thanks!

Kind regards,

Alex

Fair play to Cinematic Strings. I think we can say they’ve fixed the problem.

  1. Fantastic.Good for you, Brian.

And good for Alex and the CS team. It’s not easy to admit publicly to being wrong, so I give them big props for taking another look at their initial reflexive support of BDS.
