Update 12:19 26th March 2014: it appears the page has been removed, it’s nice to think our pressure helped make this happen.

Does a cover photo of gas valves in the shape of Jewish stars violate Facebook community standards?

Someone posted a comment on this Sooks, Nooks, and Hoses photo: "I smell shekels."

Nope.

Okay, so what about this cartoon, then?

Cow CartoonNope.

So what about this cartoon? Surely THIS violates Mark Zuckerberg’s Community Standards??

ZogowitzBut no.

So. . . maybe this circumcision joke? I mean, you’d think that since it’s actually treating the subject of, um, violation, that it must be a violation of someone’s standards??

BabyBut um. No. Really not. Don’t be ridiculous. I mean, REALLY. It’s not THAT bad. Mark doesn’t think so.

Okay then, how about some light Auschwitz Bed and Breakfast humor?

B&BNo? So how about this?

Cockroaches RatsNote the comment on this one.

"They won't eat pork though. That would be like cannibalism."

It’s really a relief that none of this need offend anyone. After all, not a thing here violates Facebook Community Standards. I know because I reported the page. Here’s the response I received in record time. Three minutes was all it took for me to be reassured that no, nothing here violates Mark Zuckerberg’s standards.

Oh what a relief to know that someone sane is looking after the well-being of us all. No need for any of us to be offended. Facebook sez so.

Community Standards
Yay! Facebook says we don’t need to be offended by this page! I feel so much better now.

Like all big businesses, Facebook has its share of bureaucratic stupidity. If enough viewers complain, the Facebook people will listen.

This is true. The UYACH (Ugandan Anti-Homesexuality Page), eventually got taken down after a concerted effort by the LGBT community and their supporters. The same can happen here, if enough of use get together. FB even reversed their decision NOT to remove that page and its’ posts, eventually!

  3. I’ve reported a bunch of these pages and received the same response in under 3 minutes. Then I’ve appealed–and never prevailed. Someone told me (urban legend perhaps) that the auditors are all in Pakistan and India and think these are funny.

I reported it and then complained twice about the rejection. Got this today:This page was removed
We reviewed the page you reported for containing hate speech or symbols. Since it violated our Community Standards, we removed it. Thanks for your report. We let Sooks Nooks and Hoses know that their page has been removed, but not who reported it. Facebook never discloses who submits a report.

  6. I originally reported four of the pictures and got a set of four responses saying that they weren’t going to do anything about it. Today, I got another set of responses saying:
    Report Date March 24
    Owner Sooks Nooks and Hoses
    Reason Hate Speech or Symbol
    Status This photo was removed
Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. The account that posted this is no longer on Facebook, and so we can’t review it for violation of our Community Standards. If the account is restored, this post might reappear. If this happens, please report it again.

Yay, they revised their decision and removed the posts I reported. So has the page it appears, I am glad to say. It’s all about pressure, if only one or two people report posts/pages, they don’t do anything about it. However, if there is a concerted effort, and multiple posts/page reports are sent, they remove them. The Snooks page is now the second one I’ve seen taken down in this manner.

It felt really good to receive that notice that the page has been taken down. We’ll just have to keep up the pressure in future efforts.
