Richard Gere To Film Movie In Israel

It took me some time to ferret it out, but I’ve discovered actor Richard Gere is set to star in a new movie shot in Israel.

American actor Richard Gere will reportedly star in a new film by award-winning Israeli director Joseph Cedar according to Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The movie will be filmed in both New York and Israel, Cedar also wrote the screenplay for the movie.

The film, expected to be called “Oppenheimer,” according to Yedioth, will also star Israeli actor Lior Ashkenazi.

The film will be about a Jewish activist in New York City, Norman Oppenheimer (Gere) who spots, Micha, an Israel politician (Ashkenazi) staring at the window of a luxury shoe store on Madison. Oppenheimer goes up to Micha, and 15 minutes later, they exit the shop, Micha having spent $1,137 on a pair of shoes, and Oppenheimer with a life-long friend.

The film will the fifth film which Cedar cooperates with producer David Mandil. Two of their films, “Footnote” and “Beaufort,” were nominated for Academy Awards.

I wonder if starring in an Israeli flick – directed by an Orthodox Jew no less – will put him at odds with his old friend.
