Wrong. Lame.
Hanukkah is celebrating the independence of Judea from the Seleucid Empire after a very successful rebellion – the first Jewish Independence-Day in Judea, really. (The “Ness” of the oil is not documented anywhere. It was invented and added much, much later.)
When you live in the reality of Israel you get a real sense of how significant and meaningful this holiday is. Abroad… they will never get it.
Seriously, Christmas is a candy holiday compared with this the meaningful Hanukkah.
Am I the only one who found that really depressing?
P.S. So glad I live in Israel, where the store downstairs for me lights a chanukiya every night and puts it in the window…
