Last night at the annual Yom Haatzmaut festivities in Modi’in-Maccabim-Reut.
What says authentic Israeli party like:
Turkish Burekas,
French Crêpes
Italian Pizzas
Belgian Waffles
And American Ice Cream?
(Not a single falafel stand)

Israel has much to be proud about, not the least of which is taking the best of diaspora cultures and making them even better. The same is true when it comes to music and dance. Here are a few examples.
First, whether or not belly dancing is indigenous to our people, we are among the best at it. Here is the lovely Nataly Hay.

Second, the annual Eilat Salsa Congress convenes toward the end of this month. Here is a great performance from a previous Congress, the “Birdcage Bachata” danced here by Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth — oops, sorry! — by Alex Leyzer and Karin Kakun. They have their own dance studio in Tel Aviv, in which they instruct students in the ballroom arts.

Finally, most people think of Israeli winter sports as an oxymoron. But that changed with the massive Russian aliya 25 years ago. Two months ago, Daniel Samohin won the world junior men’s figure skating championship held in Debrecen, Hungary. Here is his winning performance, and girls, he is quite the matinee idol. Yes, Israel has much to be proud of.

I think leaving the country’s names in the title of the food voids any assumption of taking a diaspora culture and making it better.
