Today, UNESCO is set to vote on a palestinian-led motion to have the Tomb of the Patriarchs, in the Old City of Hebron, listed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger, and registered as located in the “State of Palestine.” It is the palestinian’s latest attempt to erase Jewish history.
The World Heritage Committee of the UN’s scientific and cultural body is slated to vote on a proposal on Friday to place the Old City of the flashpoint West Bank town of Hebron on the “World Heritage Site in Danger,” list, denoting it as being in the “State of Palestine.”
Claiming that the site is endangered, the Palestinian Authority (PA) requested that the status of Hebron be fast-tracked onto the 2017 list due to “alarming details about the Israeli violations in Al-Khalil/ Hebron, including the continuous acts of vandalism, property damage, and other attacks.
”Israel has already protested the inclusion of the Old City of Hebron, home to the imposing Tomb of the Patriarchs, the resting place of the Biblical figures Jacob, Isaac and Abraham and an important religious site to Muslims and Jews alike.
Israel refused to allow a team from UNESCO to visit Hebron ahead of the vote, with Ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Sharma HaCohen saying that by refusing the team access for a field visit, Israel was taking a “principled and strategic” stand.
“Israel won’t take part in and won’t legitimize any Palestinian political moves under the guise of culture and heritage,” Shama HaCohen said.“We are in the midst of a campaign against the opening of an additional Palestinian front in the religious and cultural war they are trying to force on us,” he stated, before concluding that he hoped Israel would succeed in blocking the Palestinian Authority’s move.
The Israeli foreign ministry said that adding the Hebron site to the World Heritage list would “ignore the sensitivity of and Jewish connection to the city of Hebron” and would “further the organization’s politicization.”
And in case you were not sure of the palestinian’s motivations behind it..
Israel is working to thwart attempts to ascribe Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs to “Palestine” on Friday, a move the city’s Deputy Mayor Yousef al Jabari said would clarify that the site was “a pure Muslim mosque.”
“It is a place for Muslim worshipers,” Jabari told a group of visiting journalists on Thursday, in advance of the 21-member World Heritage Committee vote on the matter.
“We will do everything we can [for] this place to remain a mosque, and a mosque for Muslim worshipers only,” Jabari said in Arabic through an English translator.
On Thursday, during a trip organized by Media Central, Jabari told journalists that he did not recognize Jewish ties to the site nor believe that Jews themselves felt a connection to the structure.
“The real religious Jews do not come and pray in the cave,” he said. “It is only settlers who come to pray. It is not the religious Jews. If Jews think they have a connection or ties to [the Cave of the Patriarchs], why do only settlers go to this site?”
Funnily enough, UNESCO’s website acknowledges the Jewish connection to Hebron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs, preceding what they describe as the Arab-Muslim conquest!
Meanwhile, the site was endangered – when the Muslims controlled it.
