Austria strongly refuted on Wednesday accusations by abductors of two German hostages in Iraq that the European country was anti-Islamic.

Austrian Foreign Minister  Ursula Plassnik stated her country rejects such accusations, noting that just six months ago, while heading the EU, Austria had hosted an international conference on Islam at a time when the issue of cartoons insulting the Prophet Mohammad was still being debated.

Moreover, she noted her country had officially recognized Islam as a state religion in 1912.

The minister’s statement came in response to a taped statement by kidnappers of two Germans in Iraq, who accused Austria of being hostile to Islam and Muslims.

Social Democrat (SPÖ) Education Minister Claudia Schmied has banned a Muslim man from teaching his religion at a Vienna secondary school after he distributed anti-Semitic leaflets to pupils.

Schmied ordered the city school council today (Thurs) to take such action against the man, who had been teaching at the Cooperative Secondary School (KMS) on Brüßlgasse in Wien-Ottakring district. She said “delay would be dangerous.”

The reason for the ban is the man’s behaviour. He reportedly distributed anti-Semitic leaflets to his students a few days ago. The leaflets contained a list of allegedly “Jewish” firms from which, the man told the students, they should not buy anything.

Teachers of religion are usually appointed and removed by their respective religious associations, but Schmied said the law on religion provided for the minister of education’s intervention in cases in which such teachers violated their legal obligations.

Allowing the man to continue to teach, the minister said, would have caused “serious damage to the interests of the school and the students.”

Schmied’s intervention comes in the wake of a study concluding Islamic instruction in Austria has to change to comply with modern standards.

Mouhanad Khorchide is a professor of the sociology of religion at the Islamic Religion and Pedagogical Institute at Vienna University and the author of the new study, “Islamic religious instruction between integration and a parallel society.”

Khorchide’s study concludes Muslim teachers in Austria have largely anti-democratic beliefs and one in five is “fanatical”.

Khorchide, himself a Muslim, said 22.6 per cent of the 210 Muslim teachers he had surveyed had “fanatical attitudes” and 21.9 per cent rejected democracy as incompatible with Islam.

The older the teacher, Khorchide said, the more likely he was to reject the principle of the rule of law.

According to Vienna weekly “Falter”, the study claimed 8.5 per cent of the Muslim teachers said it was understandable for violence to be used to spread Islam, 28.4 per cent said there was a contradiction in being both a Muslim and a European, and 44 per cent said they had to make their students understand they were better than non-Muslims.

In recent days the Israeli Embassy in Vienna was informed that the Austrian Public Relations Association (PVRA) has elected Ashbel as their man of the year, beating prominent Austrian figures such as a Viennese judge, the president of the Salzburg Festival, the Belvedere Museum curator, and head of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights’ branch in Austria.

Ashbel was nominated by a board of judges made up of members of the media, and PR figures. Voting was carried out via the PVRA’s website for a period of two weeks.

The yearly title is given to candidates that do not work in the PR field themselves, but have stood out with their public activity.

The project headed by Ashbel that gained much success was the “Israel” tram – a cable car that runs through Vienna while given the passengers a taste of Israel’s culture. Passengers enjoy Israeli foods, music and movies on the tram.

“I am very happy to be chosen,” Ashbel told Ynet, “my election proves that we have succeeded in opening a window into Israel and gotten the Austrian public curious about other subjects related to Israel – art, high-tech, developments and culture, and not just the cliché of the conflict in the Middle East.

“It proves that the effort on the part of the embassy’s team in improving Israel’s image has paid off. We have succeeded in arousing curiosity about Israel.”

The substantial change in Austria’s attitude towards Israel, according to Ashbel, is due to the fact that Israel has also changed its approach in the fight over the country’s image.

“It is true that we do have political problems and disputes with a great part of the world,” said Ashbel, “Sitting at home, it’s easy to say ‘the world is against us’. But it’s not against us, it is debating with us. We tried to say – we don’t agree with everything either and we are not always right, try to get to know us before you judge us.”

Ashbel is already thinking of his next unconventional plan to improve Israel’s image – duplicating Tel Aviv’s shores on the banks of the Danube River.

“We are now looking into the possibility that for Tel Aviv’s 100th year, we lead a joint project between Vienna and Tel Aviv’s municipalities, in which part of the Danube is allocated for the project,” he said.

Stefan Petzner, the successor to Austrian right-wing populist leader Joerg Haider, has shocked the staunchly conservative country by revealing in a tearful interview that they shared a “special relationship”.

Mr Petzner, 27, who was confirmed on Wednesday as the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZO) after Mr Haider’s death in a high-speed car crash two weeks ago, made the admission on Austrian radio, effectively confirming long-standing rumours that he and Mr Haider were lovers.

Attempts by the party to stop repeats of the broadcast failed after the state broadcaster ORF insisted that it would not be gagged.

Mr Petzner, who met Mr Haider five years ago when he was working as a beauty correspondent, said he felt a “magnetic attraction” to the firebrand politician, who was 31 years his senior.

He said that Mr Haider’s main worry was that their relationship would not withstand the age gap.

“We had a relationship that went far beyond friendship,” Mr Petzner said.

“Joerg and I were connected by something really special. He was the man of my life.”

There has been further speculation that the crash happened after Mr Haider and Mr Petzner argued at a party.

Mr Petzner said that Claudia, Mr Haider’s wife of 32 years and the mother of his two daughters, had not objected to their relationship.

But in an interview published in an Austrian women’s magazine, Mr Petzner’s sister, Christiane, seemed to suggest otherwise.

“Claudia was sometimes jealous of him because he spent more time with her husband than she did,” she said.

Austrian far-right politician Joerg Haider, who died last weekend in a fatal car accident was seen partying at a well-known gay nightclub just before his death, according to German media reports.

The leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Future of Austria crashed his car early last Saturday after driving at twice the permitted speed limit, in a high state of intoxication.

According to a report by the German-language newspaper Bild, Haider’s evening began with a surprise appearance at the launch party of a new Austrian tabloid, where he was photographed in the company of a young local woman.

At the same party, Haider, 58, gave what would become his last interview, speaking to a reporter about his passion for Italian wine, among other things.

However, contrary to previous reports, the evening of the charismatic leader did not end there. Before heading home, Haider made a quick visit to Stadtkraeme, a local club famous for its gay night scene.

Haider was spotted leaving the place on his own shortly before 1 A.M., fatally crashing his car half an hour later.

Who’d have thought Haider liked Italian wine? That’s wasn’t very patriotic of him.

Austrian investigators say far-right politician Joerg Haider’s car was speeding at more than twice the posted limit when it crashed and killed him.

Police reconstructing the fatal accident in southern Austria say the speedometer in the wreckage of Haider’s Volkswagen sedan was stuck at 142 kilometers per hour (88 miles per hour).

The speed limit on the stretch of road where he died was just 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph).

Investigators released their preliminary findings Sunday, a day after the 58-year-old Haider was killed.

Prosecutor Gottfried Kranz says the speed appeared to be the main factor in the deadly crash.

But not to worry. The anti-Semites can still blame it on the Jooooooos.

Haider’s car veered off the road in southern Austria after overtaking another vehicle, and overturned, police said. He was alone in the car.

Haider suffered severe injuries to his head and chest despite wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Thomas Koperna, the hospital’s medical director.

Haider was most likely killed by an electromagnetic weapon which incapacitated him before a curve. This could have been in a van following him, or in the forest ahead in line with the road.
