CHALLAH @ WAFA

A Hamas military court Thursday sentenced a 27-year-old Palestinian resident of Gaza to death by hanging after it found him guilty of treason and conspiracy to murder, according to Hamas Ministry of interior statement.

It said, without giving any further details, that the ruling was based on the 1979 Palestinian Revolution Punitive Law.

Two death sentences have been issued in Gaza thus far in 2012.

According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights:

The total number of death sentences issued by the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has risen to 124 sentences since 1994, of which 25 have been issued in the West Bank and 99 in the Gaza Strip. Among those issued in the Gaza Strip, 38 sentences have been issued since 2007.

It should be noted that the 1979 Revolutionary Penal Code of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is unconstitutional when implemented by the PNA, as it has not been presented to, nor approved by the legislature. Since 1995, PCHR has repeatedly called for the abolition of this Code as it violates international standards of a fair trial.

Is a division growing within Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction? Possibly. Is ShamUnity still a sham? 100%.

Yesterday, I reported on the arrests of two journalists who made comments critical of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. In addition, I reported on the recent comments of Mohammad Dahlan regarding the expulsion of Samir Mashharawi from Fatah. In my report on Dahlan’s comments, I noted that he had sent a letter calling on members of the Palestinian Legislative Council to condemn “what is happening regarding the flagrant violations of the law and the Palestinian judiciary by the President.”

Al-Quds Al-Arabi is now reporting that three Fatah officials (Naima Sheikh Ali, Majid Abu Shamala, and Alaa Yaghi), originally from Gaza, now based in the West Bank, have slammed the recent activity of the Palestinian Authority security forces.

The three Fatah officials slammed the security forces for “waging a campaign of harassment and prosecution against Fatah members who sought refuge in the West Bank after Hamas’ takeover of the Gaza Strip.” According to the Fatah officials, Palestinian security forces recently kidnapped one of their associates. During the kidnapping, the security forces reportedly used two cars with Israeli plates.

Fatah is not alone in its condemnation of the Palestinian Authority security forces. On Wednesday, Hamas slammed them for arresting five Hamas members near Nablus. One of those arrested was a teacher, who Hamas says was only arrested because of his political affiliation.

In lead up to visit to Iran, Hamas attacks Salafists voicing support for Syrian people against Assad.

A couple of weeks ago, Hamas forces attacked a gathering of Shiites in Gaza, which some saw as a solid sign of the withering ties between Hamas and Iran. It is certainly true that ties between Iran and Hamas have weakened over the past few months. In fact, Iran has significantly increased its support of Islamic Jihad, Hamas’ main rival in Gaza.

The primary reason for the rift between Iran and Hamas arose after Hamas failed to publicly support Syria’s Bashar al-Assad as protests broke out in the country last March. While it now appears that most of Hamas’ funding comes from Turkey, Iran is still trying to keep its hand in the game. This coming week, Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh is scheduled to visit Iran.

In what is either propaganda or an attempt by Hamas to please Iran before its trip, Palestine Press, aligned with Fatah, reports that Hamas forces attacked a group of Salafists rallying in support of the Syrian people against Assad’s regime. In addition to the attack, Hamas arrested a Salafi Sheikh, Sheikh Yasser Abu Houli. Attacks against the Salafists by Hamas are not new, however, this one is certainly interesting.

Update: It appears that this report was not propaganda by Fatah’s Palestine Press. Both Walla and Ashraq al-Awsat are reporting that Hamas carried out the attack. Despite carrying out the attack, both say that Hamas secretly supports the Syrian revolution, however, the public nature of the Salafist demonstration forced them to act. In short, Hamas despite supporting the Syrian revolution wants to appear as neutral as possible as the headquarters of their political bureau is still based in Damascus.

But if my word is not good enough for you, take the word of Senior Hamashole Mahmoud al-Zahar, said to his own people in Arabic.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahhar has cast doubt his party will take up peaceful resistance against Israel as advocated by former rivals Fatah.

Under a reconciliation deal between the factions signed in May, officials called for a unified “national strategy,” and Fatah officials say that Hamas chief-in-exile Khalid Mashaal agreed to adopt non-violent popular action in favor of armed struggle.

But in comments to Ma’an late Monday, senior Hamas official in Gaza Zahhar stressed the situation in the Gaza Strip is different to the occupied West Bank.

“Against whom could we demonstrate in the Gaza Strip? When Gaza was occupied, that model was applicable,” Zahhar said.

Israeli forces withdrew from the coastal strip in 2005, and imposed a crippling land and sea blockade after Hamas took power in 2007.

Zahhar said that no program of peaceful resistance had been agreed with Fatah. “We only discussed that as a slogan,” he said, without elaborating.

The mass popular protests of the Arab Spring are not applicable to Palestinians’ opposition to Israeli occupation, he added.

“We can’t use the same means seen in Egypt, Syria, and Tunisia because they are inappropriate in the West Bank. Egypt got rid of the British occupation with arms, and since we are resisting occupation, we should use all means including armed resistance.”

So there you have it, folks. What we’ve been telling you for years now, right in front of you, clearly visible for all to see.

Another crackdown by those defenders of human rights, Hamas.

The Hamas-run government has launched a series of campaigns targeting fortune-tellers, mannequins and cigarette vendors in the Gaza Strip.

Police sources told Ma’an that 142 fortune tellers were forced to sign an agreement at the Ministry of Interior pledging that they would not practice their craft.

As well as predicting the future, fortune tellers sell amulets for protection and are sometimes called on to solve personal or family problems.

Another campaign targets boutiques displaying lingerie on mannequins. Police officials told Ma’an that security forces inspected clothes shops across the Gaza Strip and warned owners not to display naked mannequins, lingerie or “indecent advertisements.”

Police are also targeting vendors selling smuggled cigarettes and tobacco, confiscating their goods, police suorces said.

Another day, another "mysterious" explosion in Gaza

Ma’an News reports:

A man was killed on Monday by an explosion in his Gaza home, witnesses told Ma’an.

Imad Washa, 37, was killed in his home in Jabalia refugee camp. The cause of the explosion is unknown and police are currently investigating the incident.

I love how the Gazan police investigate these incidents. As if there’s any doubt as to the cause of these “mystery” explosions.

Clearly they are caused by faulty ovens.

So much to note here, in one short clip. When pushed the button to blow herself up and it didn’t work, clearly that wasn’t a sign from Allah that perhaps she should take up flower arranging instead.

According to the UK Foreign Office there are 1.5 Billion poor, oppressed people in Gaza: that's why they need so much British Taxpayer money!

When the UK’s man in Gaza is so careless with his typing, you wonder what other facts he’s messing up on. And this man gets to give out British Tax Payer aid? Hey British Tax Payer: are you happy about this? If you’d like to see the kind of “aid” the British were giving to Gaza back in the ’80s, take a look at Page 3 Girl Stunner! Karen, baring all on a Gaza Beach [Safe for work]!

1.5 Billion people in Gaza? Really?

The article is the usual mix of parroted Hamas propaganda and tales of woeful living conditions all caused by the occupation that ended years ago. Enough already. Ask them why they keep trying to kill all the Jews.

Rockets randomly- criminally- fired from Gaza into her neighbour occasioned the air strike. I am glad there is an informal, very fragile, Hamas truce as I write. It needs to be made permanent, for all our sakes, both in Gaza and in the West Bank.

Hamas manages to police crimes against Islamic Sharia violations quite strictly, you’re telling me they can’t stop people firing 30ft long military grade Grad rockets?

Let’s remember that under the Oslo Accords agreed by Israel and the PLO in 1993, Gaza and the West Bank form one territorial entity

Oslo is over. Oslo is a synonym for abject failure. Firstly the PA doesn’t run Gaza, they lost control in a military coup: not elections, elections gave Hamas a small majority, throwing Fatah people off tall buildings gave them control. And even if that weren’t the case, bidding for statehood ahead of completion of a deal negates Oslo. You’d think a diplomat would know this.

I am proud of the work that the UK’s Department of International Development is undertaking on thse issues, including working on improved movement and access and supporting business regeneration in gaza.

In other words you’re proud that at a time of great economic hardship for so many British people, some of their taxes are being diverted from their own hospitals, schools and pensions to pay for a bunch of wasters who blew every chance for prosperity they’ve ever been offered. All they want is for the Jews and Israel to disappear and if their children have to blow themselves up, by Jove, they’ll get it!

Hey British Tax Payer: are you happy about this? If you’d like to see the kind of “aid” the British were giving to Gaza back in the ’80s, take a look at Page 3 Girl Stunner!
Update: 3 hours later, 12:50 Israel Time, typo still not fixed. Amused.
