Down Under Punditry in the Middle East

Quote of the Day

“Today, more than ever, Israel continues along Rabin’s path — the path that will lead us to the sought after peace.”

- Israeli President Shimon Peres at yesterday’s ceremony honoring Yitzhak Rabin and marking the 12th anniversary of his assassination

And hence the myth - that the current “peace process” is conducive with Rabin’s vision - continues.

Sure, Rabin wanted peace, but not at any price. Certainly, not at the price subsequent Israeli governments have been willing to pay.

Here’s another quote for you - namely Rabin’s speech upon ratification of the Israel-Palestinian Interim Agreement on October 5, 1995:

“I remember at the Academy Awards a few years ago she was frenching her brother. She was giving her brother lip kisses like I never saw before in my life. And she had just said she made love to Billy Bob Thornton in the back of the limousine on the way over. And I wouldn’t want to shake her hand, by the way….And now she’s like a representative of the United Nations and world peace on hunger and all of this crap. It’s called give me a break.”

- Rich dude and self-professed expert on beauty, Donald Trump, on actress and Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, Angelina Jolie.

“If people could visit each other frequently, these artificial barriers can be broken very easily. Here I prayed, I walked freely, nobody was harassing me, and I felt very good. Seeing is believing.”

- Al Haji Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, Muslim Mayor of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, speaking of Jewish control of Jerusalem.

rock Quote of the Day“These kids [U.S. soldiers] are very young and a lot of them think people who oppose the war are against them. You have to be very careful with what you talk about - especially when you are some Hollywood [bleep]er. Just because you made a great movie doesn’t make you are an expert on foreign policy.”

American musician Kid Rock, actually making sense.

And here he is being..err..Kid Rock.

“I was at the White House drinking a Beam and Coke, shooting the [bleep] with Rumsfeld, when [President] Bush came by and gave me five like we were on Seven Mile and Van Dyke in Detroit.”

“There is no place for politics [in mourning the foreigners killed in the Thai plane crash]“

- Unidentified Iranian official talking to Israeli paper Ha’aretz about the plane crash that killed 89 people, including approximately 55 foreigners, of which 8 were Israeli.

Update: This explains it:

Iran’s ambassador to Bangkok has requested the aid of Israeli forensics experts in identifying the bodies of 18 Iranian nationals missing after a fatal plane crash Sunday.

In other words, there is no place for politics when we need your help.

Not that we shouldn’t help, and not that we haven’t helped in the past. Although more often than not, the Iranians have rebuffed our offers.

I wonder who the Iranians would turn to for help if they made good on their promise to wipe us off the map.

“Tell me what I should do, Mr Peres, because I am in love with Israel.”

- Pop star and pop-Kabbalah enthusiast Madonna Esther

My advice: do not come out with a book inspired by this love.

I couldn’t agree more.

“I’ve been in elected office longer than John Edwards or Hillary Clinton..I’ve passed more bills I’m sure than either of them –certainly in the state legislative level.”

- Barack Obama, one of the Democratic Party’s candidates for nomination in the 2008 US presidential election.

This may be true, but Hillary has refused sex to a Bill more times than him (at least, I would hope so).

Which has to count for something.

* Yes, I was being sarcastic.

simmons Quote of the DayIn terms of this Republican administration, some views about stem cell

research, gay rights, separation of church and state, and on and on—I

don’t agree with any of them. But you can worry about the trees and the

environment and gas emissions later. Right now there’s a bigger

problem, and it’s a guy who doesn’t care if you’re a Republican or a

Democrat; he wants to blow himself up and take you out. That’s the

problem. I think racially profiling anybody from the Middle East …

the Swiss have been good this year, and as an Israeli, I want you to

look at me first. I want you to search my anal cavity and look at my

tax records. I want you to look at me first, and then at every guy

named Muhammad.

- KISS front man Gene Simmons

“You get the usual assortment of stormtroopers running around. I imagine its pretty uncomfortable to sit for 17 hours encased

in plastic.”

- Jonathan Zaleski, spokeman for the Star Wars marathon, a free showing of all six Star Wars movies at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, to celebrate the movie franchise’s 30th (wow!) anniversary.

Update: Reminds me of this bit of classic comedy:
