West Coast Eagles 12:13 (85) def. Sydney Swans 12:12 (84)

My beloved West Coast Eagles have won what is being described as one of the most exciting Australian Rules Football Grand Finals of all time. On the day, they won by a solitary point, after apparently dominating for the first half of the game. I say apparently because I have not yet seen the game (because of the Jewish Sabbath). But I look forward to watching a replay.

Those who are not happy about the result include him, him, and him. As we say in Australia (but not in Israel): sucks to be you.

Now I realize the majority of you - who are not Australian - couldn’t care less. But I’m happy about it, and it’s my blog after all.

Update: How’s this for a coincidence? This is a verse from the weekly Torah potion:

“Like an eagle arousing its nest hovering over its young; he spreads his wings, he takes it, he carries it on his wings.” (32:11)

The Sheik Hearts the Swans

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006
I have never liked Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly, the so-called spiritual leader of Australia’s Muslims. Trust me…I have my reasons. So it’s not like I have to find another reason to dislike him. But I have anyway.

If this isn’t a reason to support the West Coast Eagles, I don’t know what is.

Update: Come to think of it, isn’t that a pigskin he’s holding?

Lost

Saturday, September 24th, 2005
In case your’e wondering, the Eagles ended up losing in the Grand Final..by four friggin’ points!!

Last time the Eagles lost in a Grand Final, I was inconsolable. Then again, my priorities in life were different. But now, while I do enjoy sports as escapist fare, it all seems pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things, especially in light of recent world events.

Mind you, had they won, I would have been over the moon.

Eagle Eye Howard

Friday, September 23rd, 2005
I have always been a big fan of Australian Prime Minister John Howard. He has been steadfast in his stance against terror, and has been more understanding of Israel’s position than practically any other world leader. Now I read of another example of his exemplary judgement and common sense.
Prime Minister John Howard has tipped the West Coast Eagles to win tomorrow’s AFL grand final.

Mr Howard said it would be good for football if the Swans could win, but the Eagles had the best form.

“Sentimentally it would be great for the game if the Swans were to win,” he told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

“I think, on form, the West Coast Eagles go in the favourites.”
Carn the Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update: Tim Blair gets it wrong.

Cousins Wins

Monday, September 19th, 2005
Another mazal tov is in order, this time to West Coast Eagles captain Ben Cousins, on winning the 2005 Brownlow Medal (for best Australian Rules footballer).

Not only did Cousins win, but his teammate Daniel Kerr placed second. It is the first time a club has produced a one-two finish in the Brownlow Medal since 1926.

What a week for the West Coast Eagles! Now I only hope they win the Premiership Cup on Saturday.

Carn the Eagles!!!!

Saturday, September 17th, 2005
This week, you are all about to see a side of me many of you never knew existed.

Meet David, the sports fanatic.

You see, my very favorite sports team in the whole world, the West Coast Eagles, just defeated the Adelaide Crows to reach the Australian Rules Football grand final (like the playoffs, for my US readers).

Now I realize that most of you couldn’t care less, and may even skip this post entirely. That doesn’t phase me in the slightest. I’m a happy chappy, and am going to be willing my team on to win its first Premiership in 11 years.

Go Eagles!!!!!!
